May 2017 Update - British Newspaper Archives
published by Pat Hase - 8 years 26 days ago.

We discovered today that North Somerset Libraries no longer subscribe to the British Newspaper Archives.  This is a great disappointment as it has been a valued asset and held local papers such as the Western Daily Press and the early issues of the Weston Gazette.  It is still available on its own website and through Findmypast but should be deleted from our list of free sites accessible through the Library service.  Do check to see if it still available where you live and if it is use it!

Ann RADFORD
published by Pat Hase - 8 years 26 days ago.

We had some spare time while at Portishead library this afternoon, so while waiting for people to come in we took another look at your query.  You said that Ann was the daughter of John RADFORD who was deceased when she married in 1848. We were thinking that he might be the John of the John & Jane RADFORD who had children in Wedmore.  I couldn't find a burial for him and later found John RADFORD alive and well in 1851 and 1861 living with his married daughter Betsy ROSSITER in Meare.  The death of a John RODFORD [sic] aged 82 was registered in the Axbridge District in 1863.

As you know there was an Ann RADFORD christened in Wedmore in Sept 1821 the d/o a Robert & Jane RADFORD.  Robert RADFORD died in 1824 - Could it be that she got her father's name wrong when she was married and that she was the daughter of Robert not John?

Mayors of Weston 1941-48
published by Pat Hase - 8 years 27 days ago.

The list have does not show a Lady Mayor in any of those years.  However, every male Mayor would have had a Lady Mayoress so perhaps that is what you mean?  I don't have the name of their Mayoresses and of course they may not have the same name as the Mayor.

1940-1942    Councillor Edward Morris TREVOR

1942-1943    Councillor Richard HOSKEN

1943-1944    Alderman Percy Eardley CULLING

1944-1945    Councillor George WOOD

1945-1946   Alderman William Bernard CRAIG

1946-1947   Alderman George Edward BOSLEY

1947-1948   Councillor Arthur James HEYBYRNE

Does this help at all?

Sorry wrong dates
published by - 8 years 27 days ago.
I do apologise- the date range I suggested for the picture of the lady mayoress was completely wrong. It should have been between 1941 and 1948. After '48 the NFS (National Fire Service) reverted to local units. So could I ask to check the list of mayors again for a lady mayor between 1941 and 1948 ? Thanks in advance! Jez

Hi I am sorry I do not have any photos of my mum at that time.

Jean Lewis, Clevedon Hotel
published by - 8 years 28 days ago.
Hi there. I have some information on this. Jean Lewis was rescued from the hotel by my grandfather - Leading Fireman Benjamin Marsh. He got a commendation for this. I have a few newspaper cuttings relating to the tale, and a picture of the hotel taken on the day after the fire showing a fireman there. I can send you these. I would love to see a picture of Jean from the time - 1951 - to complete the story. Looking forward to hearing from you.
