CommentsSand Road, Kewstoke published by Pat Hase - 7 years 2 months 16 days ago. | | I have a 1974 Street Directory for that area but unfortunately the houses do not have numbers only names so I can't identify which house it is, or who lived at No 46.
I suggest you look at the Kewstoke Local History Group where you can see the sort of information they hold. The contact details for the Group can be found here. If you do get an answer to your query please do not place any messages or details on our site which concern people who may still be living but contact them directly.

John STOKES published by Pat Hase - 7 years 2 months 17 days ago. | | I think I've sorted this out myself!
- John STOKES married Sarah LEONARD on the 4th April 1831 at St James, the Horsefair, Bristol. They had 4 children, the youngest, George, was born in 1839 and the GRO Index confirms his mother's maiden name of LEONARD. Sarah died in 1841 and buried on the same day as her in Nailsea was a 6-day-old Mary STOKES, who was most probably another daughter (see our transcriptions). Unfortunately although Mary's death was registered it doesn't look as if her birth was, so I can't confirm her mother's maiden name.
- John, as a widower, married widow, Ann WEEKS née VOWLES, on the 2nd Jan 1843 at St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol (Her father's name given as Richard VOWLES). John & Ann had 3 children, the first with mother's maiden name given as WEEKS and with VOWLES for the others. Ann died in 1857 and was buried in Portbury.
- John's 3rd wife was Mary BAKER, who he married on the 21st December 1858 at Portishead and they did not have any children
The George STOKES with a mother called HOBBS was a red herring as he belonged to another family!
Did anyone come up with anything different?

Eliza COOK and William OATEN published by daveerasmus - 7 years 2 months 17 days ago. | | Hello again Beverly.
I know that your William OATEN was living in Pitminster with his parents and siblings at the time of the 1841 Census. But I haven't found him in the 1851 Census. Have you?

WHY WERE THEY FORBIDDEN TO MARRY? published by - 7 years 2 months 18 days ago. | | Sorry, I did not answer your question. No, I assumed it was Eliza's parents. If her father was a John Cook & mother Phoebe [see my newer comments] it may be explained as John Cook was a farmer and miller, maybe that was considered a 'higher' occupation than a 'butcher' - I can't shed anymore light on the reason 'why' but of course there is the 10 or 12 years age gap of Eliza being so much older than William.
