The Chaplin Family
published by - 6 years 6 months 28 days ago.

From: Mr Edwin G Chaplin,

Hello Judith,

I have a John (born c1857 and also known as Jack, I believe) Chaplin in my family tree, the first son of 5 sons and 3 Daughters born to Henry Chaplin and Sarah (nee Pitts). Henry and Sarah's youngest son, George (c1871) is my Great Grandfather and I would certainly be interested in comparing notes.

I also am descended from Henry Rice & Dinah from my paternal side and also have the same problem not being able to go further than Henry my 5th Gt Grandfather.

My line goes from his daughter Dinah/Diana who married William Durbin, 1809 Henbury Church, then their daughter Mary Ann 1815-1841 married George Brown 1833 Dundry. Then William Brown 2 X Gt grandfather, Elizabeth Ann Brown, Gt Grandmother, who married Walter Chard and their son Clifford Clarence Chard my grandfather who survived WW1 but lost a leg.

Yatton Hall and Sandhill Park
published by Pat Hase - 6 years 6 months 28 days ago.

Some years ago I was interested in a young girl who was sent to Sandhill Park from Axbridge Union Workhouse.  It turned out that she had learning difficulties and spent several years at Sandhill.

In 1939 Sandhill was described (using the terminology of the day) as a "Certified Institution and Residential Special School for mental defectives".  Yatton Hall, was part of the Sandhill Park Group Hospital and there are some records at the South West Heritage Trust at Taunton but not all are open for research.  Do contact them to see what is available  - Telephone: 01823 278 805 or email somersetarchives@swheritage.org.uk.

My maternal ancestry also traces back as far as Henry Rice & Dinah and I am also unable to go back any further.  Henry Rice is my 4th Great Grandfather.  My line is as follows: Henry Rice & Dinah; then Henry Rice & Sarah Anderson; then Henry Rice & Ellen Markquick; then Henry Walter Rice & Charlotte Brooks; then Mildred Rice & Ernest Rew; then Audrey Rew & Patrick Royle; then me!
