CommentsWho was George HILL? published by gricharduk - 5 years 7 months 13 days ago. | | Very interesting. I was wondering if this Somerset Archive record might be relevant:
https://somerset-cat.swheritage.org.uk/records/Q/SR/378/2/71
It might explain the difficulty finding a baptism record.
Best regards,

HADWIN published by Pat Hase - 5 years 7 months 16 days ago. | | The post card was posted in 1903 and in 1901 a Robert HADWIN and family, including an Esther HADWIN were living at a different address in Clifton Road. However, in 1910 when Esther "Ettie" HADWIN married Bernard TAYLOR her wedding reception was at Westwood, Clifton Road - see Weston Gazette Sept 21 1910. The article also lists her wedding presents and the people who sent them.
The HADWIN family must have arrived in Weston from Lancashire, where Ester was born in about 1893. A son, Alfred Joseph HADWIN was born in Weston in about 1894 and from our transcriptions he was baptised at St Paul's when 12 years old.
Coincidentally my father-in-law purchased property from Alfred HADWIN in the 1920s.
Esther had two other brothers John Henry Percival and Ernest Ferdinand (he died and was buried in Weston, aged 6) who were born in Lancashire and it is possible that descendants of the elder one might still be in the locality.
Can anyone add to this?

September 2019 Update published by Derrick Norton - 5 years 8 months 5 days ago. | | WW2 Memories
I was born in 57 Lonsdale Avenue, Bournville Estate, Weston in January 1945. My sister Marion was born in 1936.
Our house was damaged in the first heavy raid on 5th January 1941. Marion remembers being under the kitchen table with Mum at number 57, and seeing the back door and windows pushed inwards. The table was the safest place in a German bombing raid, if they couldn’t reach the air raid shelter. There was house damage very nearby in Lonsdale Avenue and Stonebridge Road. Nine people were killed on the Bournville Estate and others injured.
My family had to move out for a year before it was repaired. For some time they also had an evacuee teenage girl, Joyce, from London living with them, whose independent attitude caused Mum worry, but she then returned home.
Mum told me that a line of bombs fell that night, and if there had been one more in the sequence, it would have hit our house directly.

What happened to Noah SMITH? published by daveerasmus - 5 years 8 months 8 days ago. | | It's nice to be able to give something back, Pat. And - let's be honest - a diversion from banging my head against my own brick walls. A one name study of SMITHs from anywhere strikes me as a very scary prospect.

What happened to Noah SMITH? published by Pat Hase - 5 years 8 months 10 days ago. | | Wow, Now why didn't I think that Noah SMITH junior, might have been in a Workhouse? I'm sure you've found the right one - thank you. I wonder why he was in there? The marriage to Elizabeth MOTSON looks promising too. Another puzzle is why he returned from Bristol if it was him who died in the Dursley area in 1877. I think I'm in danger of getting bogged down with this SMITH family when I should be concentrating on my own SMITH connections in this area! Many thanks for your help Dave - you are always so generous with your time and I am grateful. I'll let you know when I start a one-name study of the SMITHS in the Dursley area!! | |
