News & Information

The profile of Weston Worthy No 21 - Mrs Jane KITCHEN is now available on the Weston-super-Mare Page. Just scroll to the bottom of the page to see it.  Still looking for information about Worthies 16 & 19, John HARRIS and somebody called JARRETT.  I would also like more information about Jane's husband, Benjamin KITCHEN (1772-1820), not a Worthy, but it would add to Jane's profile. Thank you.

Hi Pat,

How definite is the surname "Jarrett"? I am wondering if this is Joseph Whereat. I *think* he was churchwarden at St John the Baptist and a bookseller in the town. He also founded the public library and the Weston-super-Mare Gazette. Smyth Pigott was also a keen collector of books.

Thanks for that thought.  The name does carry a query and there is nothing in the portrait to give a clue to occupation. So I suppose he could be anybody!  I've been trying to find whether anyone has a photo of Joseph WHEREAT - he was certainly of a class to have had one taken.  I have been researching the next Worthy - John LIGHT who was a saddler and I notice that he has a William GARRETT working with him so I'm going to see if he's a possibility. Thanks for your interest.
