CommentsJohn HARRIS - Weston Worthy published by gricharduk - 3 years 9 months 17 days ago. | | I compared a few maps through "Know Your Place" and you can see that no buildings were erected along that road until the early 1900s. However, at the toll gate to the east (in Kewstoke), opposite the New Castle Cafe that is there today, there was a Toll Lodge. This appears on the earlier maps - you can see it on Google Maps here
Payne Family published by - 3 years 9 months 17 days ago. | | Many thanks Pat. That information did ring a bell so I looked back at my notes and saw that I had noted a couple baptisms with a William Pain, which show he was baptising his children before John was married so maybe he was an older brother. I'm now searching more parishes to see if the two of them were baptised with the same parents.
John HARRIS - Weston Worthy published by gricharduk - 3 years 9 months 17 days ago. | | Hi Pat,
Reference the "Channel Road". Based on this report from Page 2, Weston-super-Mare Gazette, and General Advertiser for Friday 24 November 1848, I would say it is the Kewstoke toll road.
"This road on account of its thoroughly picturesque position and the extensive and beautiful scenery it commands, as well as from the fact that it affords communication with the town at either extremity, will undoubtedly be the most favourite and frequented drive in the locality. It has been designated the South Road, whilst that on the Kewstoke side of the hill is called the Channel Road."
Best regards, Richard | |
Payne Family published by Pat Hase - 3 years 9 months 18 days ago. | | I'm not sure that this will help, but I noted that at the same time as one of John's children was christened a William & Sarah PAYNE also had a child christened and that a William PAIN [sic] witnessed his second marriage. Perhaps he was a brother? When William married in Compton Bishop to Sarah BATHE he was said to have been "of Bleadon". William appears to have died in 1835, aged 70 which suggest a birth in about 1765.
July 2021 Newsletter published by Derrick Norton - 3 years 9 months 19 days ago. | | Why so few queries? Personal thoughts - 1) I love family history, but have other interests, jobs to do, family, and less energy! 2) My research follows the four grandparents' lines, and only one line involves Weston-s-Mare. I would guess I'm in a majority in being a member of at least one other family history society. It depends which line is taking my time as to who I ask help from. 3) My research goes back to the generation who moved to Weston. Investigation further back moves elsewhere. Thank you WsM FHS officials for help received so far. Having written this, I'm still wondering why you have so few comments and queries!
