CommentsZacharius Basilius GORTZACOFF published by Pat Hase - 2 years 9 months 12 days ago. | | Many thanks for that! One report suggests that they were divorced although I can't find any reference to it but she certainly wasn't a widow in 1884. Sir Basil ZAHAROFF did not die until 1936 and by then he also had married again. That does look like her death and burial in 1896 - I will send for the certificate to see if she died of burns as reported in one newspaper. She was the 4th child and 2nd daughter of John & Ann BURROWS nee LONG. She was christened with 3 siblings at Ss Philip & Jacob in 1853 which also gives her birth as 23 Sept 1845. I'm really grateful for your help - Thank you.
Zacharius Basilius GORTZACOFF published by gricharduk - 2 years 9 months 13 days ago. | | Hi Pat,
It appears that Emily married (under the name of Burrows/Gortzacoff/Gortyacoff) a Henry Willoughby Martin (a draper's packer from the 1911 census) at St Pancras on 29 December 1884. She is noted as a widow (!) on the marriage register and a French cook on the 1891 census. From the newspaper reports, the niece suggests that Emily died around 1896, however, I have not yet pinned down a death date.
Update: The marriage to Gortzacoff was announced in various local newspapers such as page 4 of the 19 October 1872 edition of the Clevedon Mercury (they spell his name as "Gortzcoff"). It says in that announcement that Emily is the second daughter of John Burrows: One family tree I have seen suggests that the second daughter is Emily Ann and her birth date is 23 September 1845. This would fit well with this death record in Whitechapel, London, for an Emily Ann Martin, who died in Q2 1896, aged 51 (GRO Reference: 1896 J Quarter in WHITECHAPEL Volume 01C Page 213). I think she might be buried in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.

ALWAIE published by - 2 years 9 months 18 days ago. | | Hi Pat
The interesting name ALWAIE came up whilst researching the Clapp Family. It seems that my 9th great-grandfather John Clapp (1583 - 1626) married Lea Hobbs who's parents were Richard Hobbs and Elizabeth Alwaie married in Wedmore 16/06/1569. I am interested in understanding the context around family members and intrigued to find an unusual name. I would be interested in information about the ALWAIE family
Regards

Puddy family published by Pat Hase - 2 years 10 months 6 days ago. | | I have to thank you for this query! My husband has a multitude of PUDDYs in his tree and in trying to sort them out I have some extra PUDDYs waiting approval! One of these is your James PUDDY and I agree with your findings as stated - I haven't got parents for him either. However Grace is worth considering. The overseers accounts for Mark might help with this but they are not transcribed and would need a visit to Taunton to consult. I also have Richard & Sarah on our tree as Richard's father, Robert PUDDY, appears to be a 5 x great grandfather BUT that is through his son, John who married a Mary ?? before 1741. When looking for your PUDDY I discovered that I had one John PUDDY with two sets of parents and that there were 18 baptisms in Mark between 1769 and 1798 with John & Mary PUDDY as parents. So thank you for initiating this clean-up of my own tree!
Stone or Brown - Confused published by Pat Hase - 2 years 10 months 7 days ago. | | The two death entries you've posted are identical - except for the surname so presumably both names were given when the death was registered. When I registered my mother's death I was asked whether she was ever known by another name and she is entered twice, same surname but different first names.
