CommentsGALLOP family Churchill published by - 8 years 6 months 12 days ago. | | Thanks very much for those leads. I agree that ELIZABETH REED appears a good candidate and the baptism at nearby Burrington in 1808 certainly implies that ROBERT BADMAN could be the deceased husband. What is puzzling is I can trace the burial of neither ROBERT BADMAN nor ELIZABETH GALLOP. I need to visit the archives in Bristol as I suspect that the city will provide a number of answers to missing marriages.
If it is the lady born Winford (you stated Wrington but I think you meant Winford) then the reference to THOMAS GALLOP being born Nempnett Thrubwell begins to look possible, despite not baptism record showing up there. In fact I cannot find a suitable THOMAS anywhere in the area. I have found a number of baptims around the correct date but I think that I have traced what happened to the others.
By the way I think that THOMAS GALLOP & ELIZABETH had two other children - JANE and GEORGE baptised in Blagdon in 1813 and 1815 respectively. Those baptisms would fill the gap between the marriage in 1811 and the first recorded baptism at Churchill.
This barnch is not actually one of my lines and I have not yet found a link to my family group at Yatton.

Bleadon published by uphill - 8 years 6 months 13 days ago. | | I would be interested to know date of your slideshow - I have relatives buried in the churchyard - also relatives farmed in the village - Shiplate - Cook/Frost are some of the names. Also interested in your 1st show about Bleadon. Best wishes | |
The GALLOPs published by daveerasmus - 8 years 6 months 14 days ago. | | Thanks, Adrian. You make a very fair point and I entirely accept that the matter is not free from doubt. However, I would add (in a spirit of playing devil's advocate):
1. It is entirely possible that Thomas GALLOP stopped being a carpenter some time between 1803 and 1811.
2. I'm not sure there is any evidence that Thomas and Elizabeth raised their family in Churchill. As far as I have established (and I repeat that I have not researched them in depth) the only thing we know is that they baptised their son, William, there.
I wonder if Elizabeth BADMAN holds the key? If we knew who her first husband was and what her maiden name was it might offer a clue as to what (if any) connection she had to Churchill. I don't have that information. Do you?

Cop Lippett, Cheddar published by Pat Hase - 8 years 6 months 15 days ago. | | A William BARNES is listed on the 1841 census as living at Cop Lippett. If you search the Tithe Map for Cheddar (on The Genealogist) you will see that he and twenty others are living in cottages described as "many small cottages upon Shelving Rock" [Plot 748]. From the map on that site you can see exactly where those cottages were at the start of what is now The Lippiatt. The date of the Tithe Map is 21st October 1837

Thanks for that. Almost all published by - 8 years 6 months 15 days ago. | | Thanks for that. Almost all that you say confirms my notes but I remain very uncertain that the THOMAS GALLOP of Wrington is the same THOMAS GALLOP who married ELIZABETH BADMAN at Burrington. My main reasons for the doubt is first that THOMAS and RICHARD of Wrington had the trade of carpenters. In 1803 both of them are listed in the Apprentices records as jointly taking on an apprentice in that trade. The marriage record of 1811 at Burrington states that THOMAS was a labourer. Second if THOMAS & ELIZABETH raised their family in nearby Churchill I would have expected a burial record of THOMAS at Wrington to have said that he was "of Churchill". I had assumed that THOMAS of Wrington had remained there working with his father (who died in 1816) and never married. I remain of an open mind on this as I have no firm evidence one way or another.
