CLARKE in Butcombe
published by Pat Hase - 8 years 5 months 4 days ago.

I think you will find that if you look at the censuses for this area you will find the use of the name Norcot (and variants) such as Norcott ADDICOTT in Blagdon and Norcot BATH born in Ubley.  Looking at our transcriptions of the Blagdon registers - the earliest Norcot I can see is a one with the surname YEELES in 1744 but there is also a BAILY and a WARREN with that first name - so they are about.  There is a PCC will for a Norcott YEELES of Blagdon dated 1790 so it might be that as a man of substance other children were given his first name.

I'v looked at the parish records that are transcribed and also Ancestry, Find my past and Dusty doc but no record of  Norcots birth anywhere, My 2x Great Grand father Charles named his son Narget and he in turn named his son Nageth so the spelling changed over the years                                        Has  anybody got the name Northcott/ Norcot in their tree with a different surname or the origin of the name?

I have "Clark" appearing twice in my tree. Nothing is nailed down yet, still under investigation. It's from the Oldland Common area Gloucestershire. Lydia Clark (1790) married to Joseph May (1785) in 1814. Later in in the 1950s I have a Stella May (Daughter of Arthur John May and Olive Louisa Woodham) marrying Walter Victor (Vic) Clark. My stuff is all hand written at this stage and trying to transpose it to a database. Maybe this fits in somewhere. Peter

CLARKE in Butcombe or Barrow Gurney
published by Pat Hase - 8 years 5 months 5 days ago.

As you are a full member I expect you have found his parents' marriage (in our transcriptions) in Barrow Gurney in 1828 to an Elizabeth SAGE - his father's first name given as Northcote [sic].  When Charles was christened in the same parish his father's name was given as Northcott [sic] - I see that his sister Ann was also christened there.  He also had a sister called Matilda who was born (and christened) in Butcombe as was Emma.  James was christened in Winford so it looks as if the family moved around a bit.  On the 1851 census the father's name is shown as Norckat - just say it with a Somerset accent! - Do you know where he was born?
