Ernest Mayne -Irish
published by - 8 years 4 months 5 days ago.

Thanks All for the Ernest Mayne info, it sounds as if the RC Electrical engineer could be a link as looking at the information posted, the other Ernest (Boyd) emigrated to Canada in 1907, so couldn't have been in Weston Supermare in 1910. A married man may have explained why the twins were given up for adoption after birth as Ernest already had his own family back in Ireland.

I have the marriage certificate for Florence Jnr and Albert Elliott as they are my grandparents. It is very interesting as the original document has her adoptive father's details and then a year later my grandmother has contacted the registry office and corrected the details regarding her father so an admendment is written on the certificate - Ernest Mayne Marine Engineer is entered following a statutory declaration made by Florence. Unfortunately my dad and his brothers didn't ask any questions of their mother so Florence'sbirth parents Ernest Mayne and Florence Jones remain a mystery, she didnt even know she was a twin.

The whole family are gripped by the latest developments so a huge thanks for all of your help

Ernest Boyd Mayne

An Ernest Boyd Mayne's WW I Canadian service file is available free at Library and Archives Canada's website. http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/list.aspx?SurnameSearch=Mayne&GivenNameSearch=ernest&  It apprears from the Attestations that he had lived in Manitoba and in Saskatchewan in Canada. He gave his brother A. E. Mayne in Winnipeg as his next of kin. I'd suggest reading the service file first. Then you can check the censuses and other records if his details check out.

I am in Canada and have experience researching. Don't hesitate to ask me for some help if need be. I see some possible addl. info already but would want to check details.

Ernest Mayne - Irish connection? Postscript
published by - 8 years 4 months 6 days ago.
Hi Nathalie, The following is a red herring I'm afraid but leaving it here so you don't go down that rabbit hole! It appears that the Irish Ernest (Boyd) Mayne emigrated to Canada in 1907 and fought with them in WW1. There are 4 records for him(?) on ancestry.ca Details of one of them: Regimental number 476332 34th Battalion NAME: Ernest Mayne BIRTH: Dublin, Ireland RESIDENCE: Moose Jaw, Saskatchewn, Canada Sorry not to have been more helpful. T.

Ernest Mayne - Irish connection?

Hi Natalie, I've been following your thread with half an eye since you first posted as I wondered if the Mayne might have an Irish connection. I see in your latest post that this was a family rumour. I've just had a look in Irish census 1901, there are only two of that name, both in Dublin. The elder is RC aged 24 and an Electrical Engineer, by 1911 he's married with a wife and several children. The younger Ernest (born Ernest Boyd Mayne 21 Dec 1886) to David and Margaret (Presbyterians) disappeared by 1911 from Irish and England/Wales census records. Perhaps it might be worth looking at Scottish Census records? Good luck with your search! T

Florence Jones & Ernest Mayne

Hi Kate, thank you so  much for the info on Florence-I am an Ancestry member so we look up Arthur Foxwell to see the pictures and add the facts to my tree. Her facts do tie in well- I can't believe she lived until 85, I wonder if she knew anything about my grandmother who was living in Coventry by then, probably not as I undertand the adoptive family cut all ties and did not speak to my grandmother about her birth parents.

I have just got my copies of the birth and death certificates for the twins Florence Jones and Ernest Mayne had in 1910 (the female twin Florence being my grandmother). They were born at 9 Anstice terrace on 15th July. Florence has put her name as Mayne but it does appear that she was never actually married to him. Sadly Ernest Jnr died at 4 mths old, cause of death given as'premature birth at 8 months, non assimilation of food'. It looks as if the twins were given up at birth as the informant is Gilbert Shorney (my grandmother's adoptive fathert) and the address on the death certificate is 4 Walliscote Grove Road, Weston Supermare where the Shorney's lived. It does say under the Occupation column on the certificate the name of the birth father 'Ernest Mayne, Marine Engineer'.

Ernest Mayne could possibly have been irish- as that is the family rumour- but other than 'Marine Engineer' there is no info about him. I was thinking of looking in WW1 records to see if he appears anywhere as he may have served on ship?

Kind regards

Natalie
