CommentsJoseph Johns - Connected with Boys and Clevedon published by - 8 years 8 days ago. | | Yes, Joseph Johns is named on my father's birth certificate (May 1924), and his occupation is given as 'General labourer'. We also found an entry in the baptism register of St Michaels church, Aberystwyth, dated 16 March 1926, and there Joseph's occupation is given as 'Sawyer'. | |

It's not a coincidence! The Edith Boys who was living at St Joseph's in Sudbury is the baby born at 24 Stonebridge, Clevedon, in January 1920. Her full name was Edith Violet Johns Boys. Her mother was Edith Annie Boys, née Edbrooke; she lived Portishead with her husband, Ernest. In 1919 Edith Annie left her husband for a man called Joseph Johns, but I know nothing about him. By 1927 he seems to have disappeared from Edith's life. By then she was in Wales and had had a second child with him - my father. In 1927 the children were sent to Nazareth House: Edith Violet in Cardiff and my father in Swansea. Edith Violet went from Cardiff to a home run by nuns in Sudbury when she was 16, and stayed in the care of the nuns for the rest of her life (she died in 1998). My sister and I were able to obtain some information from the Nazareth House archives, stating that the mother (Edith Annie) was a Catholic, and that Edith Violet had been baptised at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Clevedon. I wrote to the Church a couple of weeks ago to ask if it was possible to find out what's in the baptism register, but unfortunately I haven't had a reply.
My sister and I were unaware of Edith Violet's existence until a couple of years ago, when we were trying to find out about our father's past and who his parents were. We have identified his mother, but so far have been unable to identify his father (apart from his name). Edith Annie said that he came from Wales, and this could explain why she ended up in Wales (our father was born in Ruthin). When we decided to find out who owned Stonebridge in 1920, it was in the hope that there would be a connection with Joseph Johns.
It's interesting that Louisa Sprod was associated with the Catholic church. I note that she was 20 years older than Edith Annie (who was born in 1882). Apparently she was the baby's godmother. There doesn't seem to have been a godfather.
