The death of Chris Charsley
The death has occurred at Weston-Super-Mare of Mr. Charles Christopher Charsley, a former Chief Constable of Coventry, at the age of 79. He was born at Leicester, and joined Birmingham City police force at the age of 21, becoming Chief Inspector in 1889. When only 34 he was appointed Chief Constable of Coventry and retired in 1918.
Mr. Charsley will be remembered in the Midlands as a brilliant Association football goalkeeper. He played for Small Heath Alliance, forerunner of Birmingham City F.C., and was capped for England in the game against Ireland at Perry Barr, in 1893.
After retiring from the game he was recalled to play in the famous “test†match against Darwen, at Stoke, which took Birmingham into the First Division.
Weston’s Deputy Mayor.
Since his retirement he had lived at Weston, where he played a prominent part in public life. He was a member of the Borough Council since 1935 and was Deputy Mayor in 1939-40. He was A.R.P. Sub Controller and chairman of several committees.
He was also well known as a writer of short stories, plays, and pantomimes. Several pantomimes written and produced by him were presented in Weston, and in one of them he also composed 23 musical numbers.
Mr. Charsley died only seven days after his wife and is survived by a son and daughter.

Winora published by - 7 years 10 months 29 days ago. | | It looks like Norah was in Weston in 1911-with her mother, and with her maternal grandmother Mary Ada Keesey, -at 74 Upper Church Road .
Thanks Pat! published by - 7 years 10 months 29 days ago. | | Thanks so much for getting in touch Pat, big apologies for the rubbish mobile signal - I will get my notes in order and make contact.
With regard to your findings on Norah, i think you have it! - awesome sleuthing.
I got caught up finding out about Win's father Robert Frank Merrick... It seems he had a paint factory in Smethwick and interestingly some of the photos are at a house in Smethwick so this is yet another tie up. He also seems to moved around houses in W-S-M.
I also had a good read about Charles CHARSLEY's exploits especially his pantomime writing, council duties and setting up of the weston ARP. Norah Charsley/Frampton also appears in the cast for a number of the pantomimes as does Winifred in one.
It is still interesting to guess at the relationship between Norah and Win... they look very close in the photos and then there is the house name 'Winora'... I wonder if Norah was Win's close friend as a child and came with her when her father moved to W-S-M in the early 20s? - maybe then Norah's father Charles Charsley followed to Weston himself on retirement from his role as Chief of Police? - all conjecture of course, some further investigation needed.
As mentioned before, i will be scanning and sharing the pictures on my Flickr photostream over the coming weeks, but if you would like me to share the real albums with you at some point, just let me know.
Three of the albums i would say were put together by Win, but interestingly one of them is labelled 'To Norah from Dolly'
Thanks again for your interest... really great.

Winifred MERRICK and Norah CHARSLEY published by Pat Hase - 7 years 10 months 30 days ago. | | I think I have sorted it out!
On the 1939 Register - Winifred MERRICK born March 7th 1899 was living at 42 South Road with the retired Chief of Police, Charles CHARSLEY and his wife. Also residing at the same address was George William Dare FRAMPTON - owner of the local newspaper and his wife Norah.
Norah was born Norah CHARSLEY on the 12th Feb 1905 daughter of Charles CHARSLEY, the Chief of Police of Coventry. When Norah was married in 1929 the chief bridesmaid was Miss Winifred MERRICK - I rest my case!!
An account of the marriage is in the Western Daily Press of Tuesday 02 July 1929.

Indeed published by - 7 years 10 months 30 days ago. | | I think you're right, that sure looks like the 1939 Norah... some further investigation needed I think. At the moment my gut feeling is that the Norah of 1939 and the Norah in the pictures are different people... after all, why would they have changed the name to 'White House' if it were the same Norah? (HouseName=Win(N)ora(H)) but I need to prove this - lots of info to go on though, so I'm sure I can get to the bottom of it! - if worst comes to the worst there will always be the 1921 census! :)
Thanks very much for all the info, much appreciated.
