SPERRING

Hello Duncan, I'm one of the Sperrin variation which I guess will be included in your spreadsheet. Good luck with that. Do you use Ancestry by any chance because our Tree is there?. My 2x GGF, John George SPERRIN(G) can be found tracing back to his birth, which is shown as Blagdon at the end of the 18th century. Unfortunately I have not yet found the record of his birth. The tree may however, make your task easier. Thanks to a DNA match though it's possible to go back, say 75% accurately, as far as Isaac SPIRRING in West Harptree (1743) and also less so to Joseph SPERRING born around 1700. This Sperring/Spirring tree is not yet on Ancestry; it's too suspect. As you say an interesting project. If I can help let me know. Regards, Alan Sperrin, b1937.

SPERRING

My family came from Lympsham and I have traced back to around about 1710 (6th ggf) but the links prior to that are rather tenuous and am currently struggling to proceed any further but it’s possible that further distant relatives could have come from Wedmore, Westbury or East or West HarptreeCurrently I’m preparing a spread sheet of all the Sperring’s in Somerset. So far I have found 23 different spellings which will make it even harder to trace. The broad Somerset accent has not helped over time as the vicar only wrote down what he heard or thought he heard and of course very few labours in those days could read or write. Still, it’s an interesting project.

Thanks for that. I will keep looking

Mystery of Sarah Cardingbrook
published by zumrob - 1 years 3 months 25 days ago.

The original record states that Jos/John Hannam & Sara Cardingbrook married 23 Mar 1723 - but at the end of the entry is says at (or "of") then very faintly something that looks like "Churchill".

Looking further up the original page is recorded a marriage (poss 3 Feb 1723) for Anthony Lewis and Mary Cardingbrook (and I'm sure it says this!) of Churchill.

The Marriage License for Anthony Lewis and Mary Cardingbrook (on ancestry) is very hard to read and is beyond me - but you can make out Anthony Lewis and Mary Cardingbrook of Winscombe (no mention of Churchill however!)

Looking at the entry for the marriage license for John & Sarah in "Marriage Allegation Bonds of the Bishop of Bath & Wells (up to 1755)" (which you can download for free from archive.org) it states that Sarah was a spinster of 27.

If these two (Sarah & Mary) were related and did hail from Churchill - then checking the original records for Churchill do not help as according to Ancestry some of the years around 1696 are missing.

This would explain why you cannot find a birth entry however! Would there be any Bishops Transcripts for Churchill?
