CommentsMervyn Hugh Ernest THOMAS published by Pat Hase - 4 years 7 months 16 days ago. | | It is always advised to check the Burial Registers before you jump to conclusions - I should have done that! The death of an Enid Mary THOMAS with the same birth date as on the 1939 register was registered in 1997 in the Mendip District. So we are looking for a different Enid THOMAS.
Mervyn Hugh Ernest THOMAS published by Pat Hase - 4 years 7 months 16 days ago. | | We have a posting on our Facebook Group of someone looking for a Mervyn BROWN who we think married an Enid THOMAS in Weston in 1948 is there any chance that there is a connection with your family?
96 Moorland Road - LOCKETT published by - 4 years 7 months 18 days ago. | | The Clevedon Locketts are 20thcentury additions to the clan. My husband's Locketts are mostly from Cornwall , and were historically miners for tin and copper, (Henry Lockettc.1745/6 Redruth etc.) There is another group found in DBY/CHES and we do not know which was first, , but we know miners travelled to where the work was.
We came here for work too, from the midlands. I did find another family of Locketts in Clevedon currently,, but they seemed to have no connection to me/ husband., interesting, though. Sylvia
So sorry ,but no help | |
96 Moorland Road - LOCKETT published by gricharduk - 4 years 7 months 18 days ago. | | Hi Pat,
I hope all is well. I guess you know this but August 1939 must have been an expensive month for Edwin!
- Emily Marian (a qualified nurse at Weston General Hospital) married George Geoffrey Clutterbuck, a teacher at Walliscote Road Senior School, at Victoria Methodist Church on 11 August 1939.
- Edna married Herbert Joseph Shapcott Wells, draughtsman, at St. Paul's Church, Weston, 30 August 1939.
- Nora married Phillip Thomas Ellis at Weston in 1940
I believe all the above people are interred at Minehead Cemetery.
William Norman Joseph Lockett married Louisa Currie in 1933. He was a pharmacist in Plymouth, however, I am sure I read somewhere that his pharmacy was destroyed in heavy bombing during the war (I used to live in Plymouth so it might have been an article in the Herald there).
I hope this helps. | |
Langford and Churchill published by gricharduk - 4 years 7 months 18 days ago. | | Updated. They worked together: Millicent was a cook for Irene Mary Hardy at 2 Greenhills Road, Cheltenham, and Edith was the parlourmaid there (1939 Census). Millicent is advertising for a companion at Sutledge House in October 1947 (p4, Western Daily Press, 24 October 1947). Albert's probate also states his residence at death as Sutledge House. My guess is that Edith moved in as a companion, met Albert, married, and he then moved into the house. The house was divided in 1897 so that various people could occupy different parts. Millicent was born on 9 November 1876, so this was a 90th birthday present from Edith to Millicent. Irene Mary Hardy died 2 January 1975 leaving quite a sum of money for various charities. Her father changed his name from Stolterfoht to Hardy, probably in response to the war (see Deed Poll - Gazette).
There is a fascinating chapter on Sutledge House in "Every House Tells a Story" by Langford History Group (it was once a private school). Unfortunately, it misses out most of the late twentieth century (lack of sources), but still a good read.
Langford and Churchill published by Pat Hase - 4 years 7 months 24 days ago. | | Family Bibles often have names inserted in them – does this one have anything written in it?
I was wondering whether there was any family connection between the BALLs and the WAYs and the only commonality I can find is that both Millicent BALL and Albert Edward Samuel MAY (the husband of Edith May WAY née RICKETTS) were born in Yatton.
Millicent’s mother born Elizabeth YOUNG, married at least 4 times and Millicent had a full brother Percival Henry BALL and several half siblings with the surname COOK. Other marriages for Elizabeth to JONES and FISHER also took place.
As Grace said, Albert MAY died in 1961 and given that Millicent BALL was so much older and on a couple of censuses is listed as a nurse I wondered whether she might have been present when he was born. Perhaps she even became his god mother and gave him the bible in the first place? That of course is pure speculation.
The names connected with these two families that I’ve come across are RAWLINGS, SNOOK, JONES, COOK, YOUNG, MAY, BALL, FISHER all with links to Yatton.
