“I'm trying to find out the school in WSM that my grandmother boarded at in 1906. I have an autograph book of hers with many signatures of her classmates and at the bottom all it says is 'High School, Weston-super-Mare 1906'. She was from Bath. Her name was Dorothy BROWN.
The other names include: Edith RAWLINGS, Helen MICHAELSON, Babs SAWYER, Marjorie SIMPSON, Marjorie DASH, Enid BENNET, Pearl and Patty SISSMORE, Peggy SCHMIDT, Constance PERRY.”
We have subsequently established that she was born Evelyn Dorothy BROWN in Bath in 1894 which means that she would have been about 12 when she was at this school and presumably her friends would have been about the same age. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to trace these names with any certainty on either the 1901 or 1911 censuses. On the 1911 census she is listed as Dorothy Eveline BROWN and she is an assistant nurse (Nurse Probationer) at St Faith's Private Nursing Home in Ealing, Brentford.
Curiously her birth certificate lists “Unknown” for both her father and her mother. On her marriage certificate she gave her father’s name as Dr John Bedford BROWN and the family story is that she came from a large family and was “given away” – she is listed as a foster child in Bath in 1901.
We have been unable to trace a “High School” for Girls in Weston although there were many private schools here at that time. Is anyone researching any of the names of her friends as listed above and can give a clue as to which school they might have attended? Suggestions for further research would also be welcomed.
Just finished reading Brian Hancock's account of this event. Weston airport was also home to a Shallow Factory where the Beauforts were made, which gives a much more likely reason for this bomb, but I suspect the pilot had not been able to complete his original task and jettison his load in order to get home as quickly and safely as was possible.
My mother worked at the Shallow factory and in 1943 when the bombing was at its peak at Weston, I remember that a plane did exactly that after its run over Bristol and the bombs were jettisoned, falling into the sand at the end of the swimming baths, just outside the wall.
I'm trying to find out any information about Mary Anne Taylor b.1844 (my 3rd Great Grandmother) in Claverham. She migrated to Australia in 1862. Her parents were John Taylor b.1792 d.1868 and Ann Jones b.1794 d.1871. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I have just acquired the death certificate for me 2g grandfather, Charles CLAPP, who died in Berrow on 22nd January 1885. The address where he died is given as Berrow R.S.D., at least that's what the initials look like. I have tried searching the web, but can't find any clues as to what these initials stand for. I'm hoping someone with local knowledge may have the answer.
The above died 24th Feb 1865 at Burnham from an epileptic fit and exhaustion. Information was received from Bruges Fry Coroner for North Somerset Cheddar. The inquest was held on 25 Feb 1865.
Help would be appreciated as I am trying to find out if he was Married and would his wife be named at the inquest. The death certificate which I have has no other names on it.
William was 58years and a Labourer. I have a missing William Counsell born 1816 to William Counsell and Aquilla Burdge.
Has anyone come across a marriage between Charles CLAPP and Mary Ann COLES, probably in the mid 1820s?
Their first child was baptised at St Bridget's church in Brean on 16th May 1826.
In all the censuses from 1841 until their deaths they were living in Berrow.
In the census records Mary Ann claims to have been born in Berrow some time between 1806 and 1813, but I can find no trace of her birth. There is a Mary Ann Coles, illegitimate daughter of Mary Coles, baptised on 4th July 1806 at Kewstoke, who might be her, unless anyone knows otherwise.
In the census records Charles claims to have been born some time between 1803 and 1806. His place of birth in 1851 is illegible; 1861 says Berrow; and 1871 and 1881 say Stone Allerton. He appears to have died in the first quarter of 1885. I had thought he was the one who died in 1866, but probate records have shown that that was the one married to Ann, not Mary Ann. Curiously Mary Ann does claim to be a widow in 1871 and is employed as a housekeeper for a James Amesbury. If Charles was born in Stone Allerton, I suspect he may be the son of Richard and Fanny Clapp, born 26th May 1804 and baptised at Chapel Allerton 21st September 1806. I can't prove this, but Richard and Fanny Clapp had a son Richard, baptised Weare on 5th March 1811, and there is a Richard Clapp marrying a Harriett West also in Brean on 28th May 1833.
Sorry this a rather long, but I wouldn't want anyone to waste time going through records that I have already seen. Any help to break through these brick walls would be much appreciated.
