Miss ROSKELLY or ROSKILLY. Patron of Charles SUMMERS
published by on Thu, 29/09/2016 - 21:59

I am hoping someone will be able to help me identify Miss ROSKELLY or ROSKILLY. She was an early patron of Charles SUMMERS the sculptor, my gr gr grandfather.  All I know about this lady is her surname, which I have sourced from the British Newspaper Archive. I have not been able to establish a first name, birth date, or occupation.
I believe she may have been one of Weston-super-Mare’s local identities in the 1850's. Perhaps a lady of wealth? She is mentioned regularly in the newspapers of 1850-1865 with other Weston-super-Mare personalities such as, JHS PIGOTT Esq. and F.H.SYNGE Esq.
Miss ROSKELLY seemed to be a generous lady giving financial support to the poor and supporting many local charities. I have looked for her on ancestry but without success.
I am hoping some local Weston-super-Mare knowledge might help me establish who she was.

Please help if you can.

POPE, John
published by on Thu, 29/09/2016 - 0:39
I am researching POPE from Backwell, Somerset at St Andrews Church. I found a gap in the records from 1720 to 1754. I have a John POPE that was married in Backwell to Elizabeth Potter in 1762 but I can not find his birth date due to the missing thirty-four years. I would think that he was born around 1740.

I am also trying to find out who his parents were as I have POPE's from before 1720 and I am trying to find the connection.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am new to this site so I don't really understand how it works for someone to contact me so I will put my email address here in case someone can help me.

Thank you so much.

Bonnie

Tom (Edward Thomas) Ellaway
published by on Tue, 27/09/2016 - 22:04
Hi
Can anyone help me with a query please. I am very new to researching my family history and am hoping the experienced researchers on here can point me in the right direction.
I am trying to find out some information about my great uncle Edward Thomas Ellaway, born 1901 in Chepstow.
He got married around 1969/70. A family member attended the wedding, but unfortunately they cannot remember very much about it (not even the name of his bride) - however, they are certain it took place in Weston super mare. I cannot find a record of the wedding on any of the research websites including freebmd. Is it common for some records, such as marriage, not to be available online? Where am I best to continue my search?
Thanks in advance

Bristol Omnibus Co Records

My Grandfather Frederick Norton drove trams on the sea front from 1919 until 1937 when they were apparently fazed out. I have tried to trace Bristol Omnibus Co. records in case they were relevant but without success. Can anyone offer help, please?

Charles SUMMERS. Good Samaritan relief @ OLD Weston Hospital
published by on Wed, 21/09/2016 - 2:35

Hello.
My gr gr grandfather was the Somerset sculptor Charles SUMMERS. (1825-1878) In 1868 he carved a Dundry Stone relief for the Weston Hospital in Alfred Street W.S.M called the “Good Samaritan.” This relief used to be above the entrance door.

I am seeking an early image of this relief, before it became weathered and damaged or possibly a photo of the old hospital - before the hospital was redeveloped in 1990? as flats, which I believe is now called Hans Price Close.

I am also hoping to confirm the current location of the relief.

Past correspondence with the Hans Price Close property developer implied that the ‘Good Samaritan’ carved stone was to be kept within the building, so I am wondering the relief can still be found in the Hans Price (old Hospital) building in Alfred Street, Weston-super-Mare.

Many thanks for any help,

Jennie
