Atlantic Fish Bar history, 69-71 Meadow Street
published by on Tue, 28/03/2017 - 23:19
Hello all, many thanks for your time. I purchased the Atlantic Fish Bar in 2001 from the Nicolaides family, who in turn purchased the shop from the Jones' in 1966. I have managed to trace the fried Fish business back to 1942 but I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of its history prior to that date, as I was planning on running a 75 year anniversary celebration this year and would be thrilled to unravel some of the history of the shop. Photos prior to 2001 would be hugely appreciated especially anything around the 1930-1960 era as I think that the human history aspect of a community chip shop is always so reflective on its local society. Thank you in advance to anyone able to help and free chips on me!

John VENN and Elizabeth HAYES
published by Pat Hase on Fri, 17/03/2017 - 12:47

I recently came across this photograph of a couple celebrating their Golden Wedding in 1931.  Is anyone researching this family?

Golden Wedding John & Emily VENN of Brent Knoll

It was published in the Weston Gazette with this caption " A familiy group of the nine children and numerous grandchildren of Mr & Mrs Venn of Brent Knoll who celebrated their golden wedding in April".

According to the 1911 census they actually had 10 children but one had died.  John VENN was born in Wick St Lawrence in about 1856 and our transcriptions show that they were married at Wick St Lawrence on the 12th April 1881.  He was christened at Wick St Lawrence in 1856 the son of James & Martha VENN.

Does anyone recognise their family members in this photograph or can add any information about them.

Thank you to Pat and any others who were involved in searching Winscombe BTs.  Though these were not decipherable, it is useful to know so that I don't waste time and effort in the future.

Sarah Ann THOMAS born about 1846 ??
published by on Sat, 04/03/2017 - 8:30

I am tracing the COLE Family from Portsmouth.

However, it would appear that my Great-Grandmother was Sarah Ann THOMAS and was born in Yatton in 1846 according to the Yatton Parish Records. Census Records put her birth at various dates - anything from 1846 to 1851.

Her Father was George THOMAS and her Mother was Ann. She married George Edward COLE on February 6th 1876 at the Parish Church, Havant, Hampshire.

I am now struggling to research any further back.

As a child, during the 1950s, I remember visiting family in Port Talbot, South Wales, so I assume that once the THOMAS Family used to live there but when? When did they move to Somerset and Yatton in particular?

Any help, and direction, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Paul Cole
