Sarah Ann THOMAS born about 1846 ??
published by on Sat, 04/03/2017 - 8:30

I am tracing the COLE Family from Portsmouth.

However, it would appear that my Great-Grandmother was Sarah Ann THOMAS and was born in Yatton in 1846 according to the Yatton Parish Records. Census Records put her birth at various dates - anything from 1846 to 1851.

Her Father was George THOMAS and her Mother was Ann. She married George Edward COLE on February 6th 1876 at the Parish Church, Havant, Hampshire.

I am now struggling to research any further back.

As a child, during the 1950s, I remember visiting family in Port Talbot, South Wales, so I assume that once the THOMAS Family used to live there but when? When did they move to Somerset and Yatton in particular?

Any help, and direction, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Paul Cole

Using the new GRO index you can find the maiden name of Ann when the birth of Sarah Ann was registered. (Yatton was in the Registration district of Bedminster). Ann's maiden name appears to be CRUSE but they were married before civil registration started.

FreeREG gives a marriage of a George THOMAS to an Ann CRUSE at St Swithin's Church, Walcot, Bath on the 26th Oct 1834.  You can see the image of this Somerset marriage on Ancestry but no further details are given of this couple.

On the 1841 census George THOMAS says he was born in Somerset but Ann is not born in Somerset.  However, they are living with another Ann Thomas, aged 75, who might be George's mother (or elder sister?) who was also born in Somerset.  This would infer that it was later that the family moved to South Wales.

Hope this helps a little.

Evening Pat Hase,

Many thanks for the information - it looks an interesting route to take and one that I will certainly follow up.

Again, many thanks for your help and advice.

Regards,

Paul Cole
