I'm posting two obituaries about my grandfather
As I didn't really have the chance to meet him, I'd like to find out more about him. He was well known locally, so I'm hoping this post will yield something about him I can really relate to. He was obviously a brave man. My mother is now well advanced in years, it'd be good to share anything I find out from here, thanks for the chance to ask about him.
DEATH OF MR ALFRED PAYNE (73)
A Weston lifeboatman for 51 years, Mr Alfred William Payne died aged 73
R Payne, better known as “juicyâ€, retired from service in 1977. He lived with one of his sons (Derek) and daughter-in-law at Newland Road, Weston.
Mr Payne was one of the coxswains in the history of the Weston lifeboat – at the age of 37: and became superintendent coxswain in 1970. After 50 years service with the lifeboat, he was presented with a golden jubilee award.
Born in Worthy Place, Weston, Mr Payne lived in Palmer Row for a number of years.
His family have been fishermen and boatmen in the town since Weston was a village. Mr Payne’s son, Derek, frequently crewed with his father.
When Mr Payne joined the local station in 1926, it had a non motorised lifeboat powered by 12 oarsmen and supplemented by sails.
After retiring as coxswain, he remained on the local station’s management committee.
Mr Payne leaves four sons and two daughters. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday morning at Weston Crematorium.
LIFEBOAT VETERAN ALF PAYNE DIES, 73
Tributes poured in last night for one of the West’s best known lifeboatmen.
They were for Mr Alf Payne, a member of the Weston-super-Mare crew for 51 years, who died earlier Yesterday.
Mr Payne, aged 73, of Newland Road, Weston, had been ill for a short time.
He had, however, never given up his work for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
Yesterday as the flag outside the Weston boathouse flew at half mast volunteer helper Mrs Jo Allum said: “People have been coming in all day to say how upset they are.
“Everyone knew Alf. He was a great character – the like of which we will never see againâ€.
Mr Payne, whose family had been fishermen and boat owners in the resort from the days when it was a small village at the turn of the 19th century, joined Weston lifeboat crew in 1926.
He was appointed second coxswain in 1938 and became Weston’s youngest coxswain in 1948 – when he was 37.

George Howell published by on Fri, 18/08/2017 - 6:43
Hello,
I'm hoping to find descendants of George Howell b. c.1793, bur. 25 Oct.1850, Banwell, and his wife Grace Fry bap. 23 Oct 1814, Kewstoke. Bur. St Anne's, Hewish (with her 2nd husband, Joseph Palmer), 23 Oct 1906.
George and Grace's 2nd son, John (in photo), emigrated to New Zealand at 16. He's my GG grandad.
Their other surviving sons were ; Henry, d. Waldeck-Villa, Walliscote Rd, Weston-super-Mare 2 July 1899. Wives: Ann Ham, Caroline Coles nee Russell.
George, bur. St. Anne's, Hewish. Wife Jane Curry.
Robert b. 1921 St Andrew's, Banwell with wives, Mary Ann Palmer and Emily?
James bap Banwell 7 Sept 1848, death unknown. (There was a previous James who died as an infant, bap 9 Aug 1846 and buried 19 June 1847, St Andrew's, Banwell)
After George died in 1850, Grace had 2 more sons to unknown fathers, both baptised as Howell:
William Morgan, born 20 March 1852
Joseph, born 19 Oct 1854. Both deaths unknown.
Henry was born in Kewstoke. Grace's family from Kewstoke. Daughter of Joseph Fry and Mary Cox. Joseph was 'bastard son' of Betty Fry. Mary, daughter of James and Ann Cox of Wick, St Lawrence.
All the other Howell boys were born and baptised in St Andrew's, Banwell, living around Rolstone, Banwell, Puxton area.
One discrepancy on my John's death certificate says his father's name was John. Other details match. Some discrepancy with dates, which I'm not too worried about. So would love to hear from anyone who also has this ancestry to 'break the wall' finding out where George Howell was from.
I have a public Ancestry tree which I've tried to map out the family, JenkinsKerrieMarie. I have also done the DNA test. Gedmatch Kit is A274929.
Amazingly to me I have a DNA match with someone else with ancestry from Kewstoke. His ancestor was buried 2 before my G x 4 grandfather Joseph Fry! No relationship proved on paper for that one, but amazing to think that our ancestors were rubbing shoulders back then.
A big thank you for making the results of all your hours of work accessible. Such a wonderful site you have created.
Sorry, I know Wookey does not come under this history society, but I wondered if anybody knows's if there is a related history society that I can access parish records? My Day family are living in this area in the 1500's and having comprehensive records like you do here will knock a brick wall down I have hit, I would be so grateful.
