Searching James Kerton of Lympsham
published by on Mon, 11/09/2017 - 8:37
Thanks for letting me join.

I am trying to trace the parents etc. of James Kerton/Kirton/Kuriton/Cirtin, who married on 29 Mar 1789.

The name changes depending on the record taken.

James KIRTON (x) single man of Lympsham and Ann MILLIER or Miller spinster otp
wit: Francis DAVIES Wm PALMER

So I guess his birth date was around 1768. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks JW

FreeREG has the following baptism - County Somerset Place Ashwick Church name St James Register type Parish Register Baptism date     06 Oct 1776 Person forename James  Person sex M  Father forename Thomas Father surname KERTON Mother forename Rebecka

From transcription on this site - Huntspill St Peters & All Hallows 07-Apr 1771 Ann MELLIER dau James & Ann

I wonder if either of these are possible matches.

This is an interesting query because my husband has KERTON ancestors  (his are from Wells in Somerset) but his 3 x great gradfather was a Sampson KERTON who was born in about 1790 in  Ashwick the s/o a James & Ann KERTON.   I've often wondered whether the Ashwick  KERTONs may have also gone to Lympsham because there appear to be no KERTONs in Lympsham before the early 1800s.

From our transcriptions I see that your James KERTON married in Berrow which is of course is very near to Huntspill suggested as the birthplace of Ann by Lorna.

Thanks for the comments. I did wonder if he moved from Ashwick, though it seems there are many marriages in Ashwick but no births of the grooms on the records. I am wondering if the records got lost.
Found this site which is of interest to Kertons
