I'm trying to find out if both parents had to be present at the registration of a birth in the 1920s, or if one parent could do the registration on their own. The applicable law at the time was the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1874. This states:
"1 Information concerning birth to be given to registrar within forty-two days
In the case of every child born alive after the commencement of this Act, it shall be the duty of the father and mother of the child, and in default of the father and mother, of the occupier of the house in which to his knowledge the child is born, and of each person present at the birth, and of the person having charge of the child, to give to the registrar, within forty-two days next after such birth, information of the particulars required to be registered concerning such birth, and in the presence of the registrar to sign the register."
The 1874 Act specifically states that the father of an illegitimate child should be present and sign the register if he wishes to be acknowledged as the child's father.
The current situation (under the 1953 Act) is that either parent may register the birth on their own and can include both parents' details if they were married when the baby was born or conceived.
Does anyone know if one parent could register the birth in the 1920s - or where could I try and get a definitive answer? If both parents had to be present at all birth registrations, this would be important to my research as it would mean that my grandfather was still around when my father's birth was registered.
One of my 6xgreat grandfathers was Harry BATT. He was the father of James BATT who was christened at Yatton on 27 July 1740. The mother was Mary.
There is a transcript of a marriage of Harry BALL and Mary JONES on this site in Yatton on 6 June 1738, but I think this might be an error. I have had a look at an image of the Parish Register on Ancestry and I'm pretty sure that the surname is BATT, not BALL. Could this be checked, please?
Christopher Sadberie, parson of Weston Super Mare married at Banwell 18 Sep 1634. His wife Judith's surname is a little unclear on the image on Ancestry. They have indexed it as Keene but it looks more like sie at the end to me and I was wondering what the Society think it is please?
The Oxford University Alumni lists Christopher as being from Wiltshire and is most likely the Christopher Sadburie baptised at Highworth in 1599 to Edward Sadburie and his second wife Margaret late Goulding nee Stratton. From what I can decipher from the poor quality copy of Christopher's PCC Will, he had four sons, William (of Axbridge), Walter, Edward (buried at Nailsea in 1677) and Christopher, and a daughter Hester.
I'm researching the Sadburies of Highworth and Christopher is a distant sideline. Any help clarifying Judith's surname would be much appreciated.
I am researching the above who was an American merchant seaman in WW1. He married Florence Violet Dowling (1895-1984) in Bristol in Apr-Jun 1917. Can anyone tell me exactly when and where? Also, any information on the Bristol Line Shipping Company at this time. I know Bristol is not exactly in the area covered by the Society, but the Membership is usually so good at helping I thought I would give it a try!

Hi all - I am working on a piece about suffrage activities in Weston, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the law allowing women to vote for the first time.
I was wondering if anyone knew of someone in their family in Weston who was involved in the Weston Suffrage Society, or involved in the suffrage movement in general.
I know about Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Dorothy Pethick and Ivy Millicent James. But it would be great to get some other names, and details if possible.

I have had a request for more information about Burton House School. Were any of our members or their relations educated there?
From this advertisement of 1922 you can see that it was founded in 1886 - When did it close? If you have any memories of the school including photographs can you share them? Did they actually go sea bathing as promised in this advert?
