I am stuck as to why I cannot find an entry of birth for Eugene Morgan born approx 1835, but I cannot find an entry of Marriege either.

Like wise i cannot find any entry of birth for my Grandfather who was born approx 1835, they say Notting Hill, London. I do believe they were travellers, and I have an enquiry with the Romany and Travellers History Society, up to now no luck.

Any one that can help I would be grateful.

Proff-41.

I hope that you will be able to attend the Society meeting on the 29th May when you will be able to speak to a member of  The Romany & Traveller Family History Society who may be able to give you some tips.  I think you meant to say that you can't find an entry for your grandfather, Arthur Patrick MORGAN, who was born in about 1881 at Notting Hill according to the censuses - he was the son of Eugene MORGAN who was possibly born, as you state, in the Ramsgate area in about 1835.

I have found an announcement in the Kentish Gazette for Tuesday 7th May 1867 as follows:

MORGAN - DONOVAN  April 29 at Ramsgate, Mr Eugene Morgan to Miss Mary DONOVAN - but I can find no trace of it on any GRO index. There is a birth of a Louisa Mary MORGAN in Dover in June qrt of 1867

However it does fit with the 1871 census which shows a Louisa MORGAN, aged 4, with Eugene and Maria[sic] MORGAN at a licenced lodging house in Maidstone, Kent.  On the 1881 census Eugene and a Mary Ann are in Exeter in Devon - no sign of Louisa

There is a birth in 1887 and death in 1889 of an Ernest Eugene MORGAN in the Southampton Registration District who just might be another son of  Eugene MORGAN - who does make an appearance in the Hampshire area from time to time.  His birth certificate might identify his parents who just might be the same as Arthur's parents.  Does anyone else have any suggestions for this one?

This is turning out to be such an interesting family.  So now you have another surname to research!

My first reaction was that when Eugene was born his parents were not married and he took his mother's name (MORGAN) but he knew that his father was John SHEEHY.  However, it may be a coincidence, but on FreeBMD there is a death registered in the Thanet District of Kent in the March qrt 1869 of a John Morgan SHEEHY, aged 75, who just might be Eugene MORGAN's father.

What was John SHEEHY's occupation and who witnessed the marriage of Eugene and Maria? Did Eugene sign his own name if so did he use MORGAN or SHEEHY?

Good Luck with this one!

Pat

Eugene married as Eugene Sheehy he 29 says he was a hawker,Fathers name John Sheehy, father was a labourer,Maria Donovon obviously could not read or write as X is marked.Witne ss X for Eliza Ann Spalman &Ellen Sheehy.Married in St.Augustine RC Church Ramsgate,But they say they cannopt find an entry of Birth for Eugene.?what is very interesting I checked the 1851 Census and John Sheehy says he is 30 and born 1821 in Limerick. I then checked Church Baptism records in Limerick.there is an entry 29th. July 1817 Father Morgan/Sheehy Mother Catherine Toomey,Parish Pallasgreen &Templebredon.Do you think this is the same family?

Sorry Pat a lot there to take in ise,nt there.!!Priscilla.

Thank you for the additional information.  If Eugene was born in about 1835 as you originally suggested it seems unlikely that a John SHEEHY born in 1821 was his father, he seems a little young.

On the 1851 census entry what occupation does that John SHEEHY have?  Where is he living?  Is he married and if so what is his wife's first name?  Do they have any children and if so where were they born?  Any others born in Ramsgate like Eugene?  Have you found an Ellen SHEEHY?

Where did you find the Baptism Records for Limerick?  I'm intrigued by the inclusion of the name MORGAN.  Everything you find always asks more questions!

Sorry for delay in replying Pat,Yes i have a Ellen Sheehy witness to the Marriege of Eugene Sheehy 1867 Ramsgate.

Father was John Sheehy a Labourer.Wife of Eugene is Maria Donovon, she obviosly could not read or write as Xmarks the spot of Signature.Could be the reason why she appears in census forms later as Mary.!!On the 1851  Census there is a John Sheehy Spouse Morgan Sheehy. Sorry Pat i think i have got myself confused.Priscilla.
