I have recently been contacted by someone who is interested in the above named William DYER who lived in Weston-super-Mare and was Land Agent to the Smyth-Pigott estate.  Is this the same family as yours?

Dear Pat,

This must indeed be the same William Dyer as my records confirm, baptized Wick St. Lawrence, Nov.1838 (my Gt G'father's brother).

I have all his census records, but only in his probate is he referred to as a "land agent" - previously farmer, builder & contractor.

The name "Smyth-Pigott estate" is new to me and any further information would be gratefully received and offered.

Many thanks,

Derrick Norton

I've been looking at this DYER family. You may already have this but it seems that this William DYER was the s/o William DYER & Mary Ann (née TRIPP] and grandson of William DYER & Sarah [née HOLMES] who were married at Moorlinch in 1785 but were both "of Chelton" - probably Chilton Polden.  Sarah died in 1799 and a William & Ann DYER started having children baptised in 1801 when Ann is described in the Baptismal Register of Chilton Polden as "Reputed" Wife of William DYER.

There is a marriage in St John's Bedminster, Bristol on 27 Oct 1800 of a William DYER and an Ann HOMES.  I haven't seen the original entry but I'm wondering if this is the same William DYER and whether Ann and Sarah might have been related.

William Dyer is my Gt Gt Grandfather. His son Harry is my Gt Grandfather and his daughter Marion Hilda is my Grandmother. I also was told he was a land agent for the Smyth Piggot estate. Believe he also built a road of house (still exist) can't remember the name atm (currently at Work) which still exists and these were distributed amongst his children. Somehwere near Milton Road/Locking Road I seem to remember. If I remember he died early 20th century but I'm told he married again

The name of the street is Holland Street but this was named after his wife Louisa Holland - so not sure of the reference to a "Trym" above unless this was his second wife or was another William Dyer - there are a few of them!

William DYER, who was born in Wick St Lawrence in  1838 married Louisa HOLLAND in 1859 in Yatton.  After her death he married Mary Jane "May" SARGENT in Wadham Street Baptist Church in Weston in 1898.  William was the son of another William DYER who had married Mary Ann TRIPP in Temple Church Bristol in 1824.

What did you mean by the reference to "Trym"?

My eyes must've deceived me - I was sure I saw the surname "Trym" whereas I can see it is "Tripp"

Dear Pat, Please would you offer my email address to Diana, as I have information about William Dyer which she will find very interesting.

With regard to his second marriage to May Sargent, what is the source, please, of the wedding taking place at Wadham St. Baptist Church?

Many thanks,  Derrick Norton

There was an announcement in the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette - Thursday 21 April 1898 as follows:

DYER - SARGENT — April 19, at Wadham-street Chapel, Weston-super-Mare, the Rev. T.  Longhurst, William Dyer, of Manor House, Weston to May, eldest daughter the late John Sargent of Bath.

You can contact Diana by clicking on her name over her entry and using the Contact Button.  If you have any problems come back to me!
