Baptisms at Weston-super-Mare Emanuel Watts children
published by on Wed, 31/07/2013 - 6:51

Are there baptisms available at Weston-super-Mare ? Emanuel Watts from Worle (son of Thomas Watts and Susannah Fry) and Mary Ann Banwell from Kewstoke raised their family at Worle where Emanuel was a labourer and 3 of their children were baptised James on 26 Sept 1830, John on 3 Feb 1833 and Thomas on 22 March 1835. I am interested to find baptisms for two of their subsequent children - Mary Ann born c1836, Hannah born cdec1846-jan1847 at Weston-super-Mare. The family sailed to Australia in the Palmyra from Plymouth on 14 April 1848.

In 1841 they were living at Regent cottage in Weston-super-Mare next to a school, the preceding locations are High street, Devonshire Inn, various cottage names, Vale, Hill, Ivy, Sea View, Weston Hill, then after more Regent cottages, Villa, Marine, Weston, then 6 and 7 East something, bvd ?, then Weston again. What would be the nearest Church ?

Emmanuel Church wasn't built until 1847 and we have Baptisms from that date online under Research Aids & Transcripts.  Before that date the only church in Weston was St John the Baptist, the parish church - and Mary Anne was christened there 15th Dec 1836 (transcribed as WAITS - we will check the original).  And there are two burials at St John's who just might be other children:

9th July 1842      Emmanuel WATTS aged 14 weeks

28th Feb 1845    Emma WATTS aged 7 months

Thank you. That's marvellous news re Mary Anne.

I found Hannah in the IGI baptised on 25 April 1847 at the Wesleyan Methodist, Banwell, Somerset.

Problem solved.. Many thanks.

.Best Wishes, Wayne

Glad you found Hannah - did you notice that there was also baptism in the same place of an Elizabeth WATTS on the 3rd Feb 1839 d/o Emmanuel & Mary WATTS on Familysearch?

The Banwell Wesleyan Circuit covered a large area including Weston - we have transcriptions up to 1837 on this site - filed under Banwell.  Perhaps we should start a new section for Non-Conformist Transcriptions.

Hi Wayne

I've only just picked up your posting as I've been away. I am also descended from the Watts family of Worle. My 4x great grandfather, John Watts was the first cousin of your Thomas (m Susannah Fry). I have been helped with this family by Malcolm Otton and Mary Mason (not sure if either subscribes to this group) . These are the offspring I have for Emmanuel and Mary Ann Banwell. Apologies if you already have them. No baptism dates sorry and I stress that I can't verify them as they have been given to me but they may give you a starting point to develop the family further.

James, John and Thomas as you have them

Mary Ann b c 1835,  Elizabeth b c 1838, Dan b c 1840, Emanuel b and d 1842, Emma b 1844 d 1845, Emmanuel b 1845, Hannah b c 1847.

I have marriages for some of these too.

Let me know if you want any further info.

Regards

Heather

Thank You Heather and Pat, yes I got the other baptism from familysearch, and any more baptisms from the Weston area would be nice, but it looks like they were probably using Wesleyan chapels for the rest. .. We have seen the Otton tree too.  I think the main mystery for Watts researchers in Australia is what happened to John Watts born 1833 .. but that's something to sort out here. .. Cheers, Wayne
