Can anyone help me with information on the parents of Jesse James, born about 1816 in Cheddar, Somerset. He is in the 1851 England Census age: 35 yrs, but not in the 1841 England Census. He died Aug 28 1880. Spouse: Sarah (nee Morris b: 1826 d. 1894). Children: Robert, Isaac, Elizabeth, Hannah and Jesse (my family link). I do have his probated will 23/Feb/1881. Thanks.

I think Sarah's maiden name was NORRIS rather than MORRIS. There is a marriage record for Jessy JAMES and Sarah NORRIS in Axbridge RD in 1844 (Q1 Vol 10 p494). Interestingly the names Jessy BROOKS and Jessy WEEKS appear there as well. It might be worth investigating whether these were aliases. If you obtain the marriage certificate that should (hopefully) help identify his father.
Dave. Thank you. You may be quite right in that Sarah's maiden name was Norris and not Morris. I see they had a son named Isaac Norris James, so could be use of her maiden name. I will have to re-investigate.
The 1841 Census I sent to you is not your Jesse James. I've since found a Death for a Jesse Jones, registered Sep Qtr, 1843, Wellington, Somerset, Vol 10 Pg 313.
Interesting stuff, my great grandmother was called Hannah Weeks, (married Thomas Weeks in probably the 1880's/ not yet researched). He was born Axbridge in the 1860's I'd guess. The lady that lived in the Cheddar Caves in Victorian times was I believe seduced by a local Weeks (aliases would be useful in seductions ? )
I'm not sure of the connection (if any) with Jesse JAMES but you might find this article about John & Ann WEEKS interesting. It contains a breakdown of the WEEKS family including John's mother who, it is claimed, did live in what is now Gough's Cave.
