Thomas DAVIS Bristol
published by jonrig on Sat, 16/06/2012 - 14:36

Hi, A friend, Val Rogers from Canada, is trying to find information about an ancestor: Thomas DAVIS ie: Occupation, residence etc. His daughter Sarah DAVIS was baptised in 1796 at St Michaels Bristol.

Sarah was living at Victoria Terrace WSM when she died in 1890.  Which Cemetary could she be buried in? In the hope that some family info might show there?

Where can we start looking for any further information on this Thomas DAVIS.

Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Below is some information from Val Rogers which might help?

regards

John Rigarlsford. (Rooksbridge)

Rosa’s grandmother and my ancestor Sarah Reynolds, formerly Davis, lived the latter part of her life in Weston Super Mare, and died there. Her parents were Thomas Davis and Elizabeth Smith. For 15 years I have been trying to find out the occupation of Thomas Davis so I could get a little further back. There are just too many Thomas and Elizabeth Davises in Bristol at the time. His oldest son was an auctioneer in Bristol.

I once wrote to the library in Weston Super Mare and they were kind enough to look up the death of Sarah in an old newspaper. Unfortunately it just gave the date.

What I have always hoped for is to discover an obituary that named her father and said what he did or gave at least some clue about the rest of her siblings.

So here’s the information about Sarah, and if you ever bump into her while researching Somerset, I would appreciate hearing from you....so much!!

Sarah Davis,baptised April 24 1796 at St.Michael’s Bristol
Married Isaac Partridge Reynolds October 31 1818 at St.Michael’s Bristol
Children were Sarah Ann Reynolds(married Thomas Rees)
William James Reynolds, died young
Elizabeth Reynolds, married Benjamin Tilley, from Uphill Somerset. In 1901 they were living at 194 Taymore, WSM.
Amelia Maria Reynolds, never married, ran a small  school at 4 Wellington Terrace in WSM in 1871, died 1909 in WSM
Jane Reynolds married a Gwyer, and then an Albert Printer, in WSM abt.1870. She lived in a number of places in WSM,Grove Place, Park Villas,Maldon Villa, Wilton House Walliscote Road. She didnt die until 1923
Henry Reynolds master mariner, died at sea in 1863.
Emma Reynolds my great grandmother who married Woolgrove, then Hart and eventually moved to London.
Ellen Reynolds died young
Celia Ellen Reynolds married Thomas Millington Morgan,Lived in Worcs., then London.

Sarah started a ladies school in Bristol after her husband died. 1856 is the earliest reference Ive found. It was located at 7 Freemantle Square.
In 1871 she moved to WSM, where she lived at 4 Wellington Terrace with Amelia and the children of the school. She was still there in 1881

Sarah died December 18 1890 in WSM at 2 Victoria Terrace. She was 95, and her death was reported by her daughter Jane Printer.

I have wondered if her headstone is there, or if an obituary was published in a different paper, or if she left a will that named her brother or his children.

Sarah REYNOLDS was buried in Weston Cemetery on the 23rd Dec 1890 in Grave No Tc 3592 but there is no memorial on the grave.  In 1907 an 87 year-old William Henry STEPHENS was buried in the same grave - but again no inscription.
