Arthur COLES
published by CanneC on Mon, 23/04/2012 - 15:19

I am trying to find the baptism of Arthur Coles, my 5x Great Grandfather.  I know he married Betty MILLARD in St Martin's Church in Worle on 7th May 1765 and I believe was buried in St Paul's Church in Kewstoke on 5th March 1781.  Can anyone help?

Have your tried Familysearch for a possible Arthur COLES? There is a christening of a Arthur COALS [sic] son of Will & Deborah at South Brent (Brent Knoll) on the 16th Jan 1726.  Probably a little early to be your Arthur COLES unless he was a widower when he married Betty.

I see that when your Arthur COLES got married one of the witnesses was a Richard COLES.  Presumably he was a relation - could be father, brother, uncle, cousin?

What were the names of Arthur & Betty's children? - sometimes these will include the names of grandparents.  I did notice that Betty's mother was possibly Anstance PRENTER and that Arthur and Betty had a daughter who died young with the same first name.

I also have a COLES line.  Josias COLES lived in Worle and gave his place of birth as Rowberrow.  However I think I have found his baptism in Lympsham in 1793 the son of John and Jane COLES.  A John COLES married Jane HALL in Lympsham in 1775 and there are 11 children baptised between 1776 and 1794.  There is also a possible burial for John COLES aged 73 in 1822.  Lympsham is only a short distance from Brent Knoll so maybe there is a connection with the Arthur that Pat found.

Hello Debbie

Thank you for your reply to my query.  I don't think there is a direct link between your Coles & mine but expect there is some connection somewhere! I haven't found a Josias but do have a John bap 6 Nov 1774 in Worle, but haven't found a wife.  He was buried 7 June 1845 also in Worle.

Many thanks Anne

Hello Pat

Thank you for your reply.  I know you've helped me in the past and have done so again.  I'll certainly follow up Family Search and Richard Coles.

The children of Arthur and Betty Coles that I've found are; Richard & Thomas both bap on 29 May 1769, Anstance bap 22 Jan 1770, a son bap 19 April 1772, John bap 6 Nov 1774, Jane bap 15 June 1777, James bap 13 Feb 1780.  All in Worle.  I'm directly related to James Coles.

As you discovered Betty Millard's parents were Joseph & Anstance Prenter & she was bap 21 Aug 1742.  I know that I could follow this line back further but want to stick with the Coles trail for now.

Many thanks

Anne
