William Vowles Lovell b. 1844
published by Les Martels on Sat, 26/02/2022 - 20:18

Is anyone researching the above person.  He was the illegitimate son of Esther or Hester Lovell and was born in Yatton.  His father was probably named Vowles.

She married Samuel Gregory in 1847 and Samuel took William as his own.

There is a marriage for William to Ellen ? 4th qtr 1871  Bristol.  (3 Ellens listed but I can't work out which one) but nothing further shown for him.  There is a 1905  Prison entry at Wakefield for begging  for a  William Lovell born Yeaton (Yatton perhaps) which could be him although the age is a couple of years out.

Other than that I can find nothing after his marriage.

Can anyone help please.

William seems to be using the surname "Gregory" in 1881. There is a auction notice on page 1 of the the Bristol Mercury for Saturday 16 April 1881 advertising the sale of his shop and off licence (where he is tenant) at 15 William Street, Pylle Hill, Totterdown:

Bristol Mercury Saturday 16 April 1881

There is a following report on page 8 of the Bristol Mercury for Thursday 6 October 1881 where the beer licence is finally transferred (on the 5 October 1881) from William Vowles Lovell Gregory to John Cheriton:

Bristol Mercury Thursday 6 October 1881

There is a William Gregory, dairyman, born about 1843 at Yatton, living at 18 Chandos Road, Redland, in the 1881 Census. An Ellen Gregory is listed as his wife. At the time, "The Gloucestershire Dairy" was situated at 14 Chandos Road.

Thank you so much for that information.  Although I had looked under Gregory, I found nothing that was conclusive at the time as I did not know he married an Ellen. There are so many William Gregorys  and it was a matter of which one..  I did not expect to find him in Totterdown and had kept my original research in the Yatton, N. Somerset area.   I attended Sunday School very close to Wlliam Street but don't remember Pylle Hill although I knew the area well as a youngster.  Looking at Google, I see Pylle Hill Cres. is at the bottom of William Street.  It was a long time ago.  Thanks again, that has opened up a bit more on this family for me.
