St John's School 1929/30
published by Pat Hase on Mon, 24/01/2022 - 23:02

I have received this Research Query from member Suzanne Rowley. Can anyone help her?  Suzanne - perhaps you could post the photograph in a comment to this Query?

Hello All,

My dads name - George GILL

Just wondering if anybody can help, my father was a member of the St Johns School football team 1929/30 I have a photo. If anybody has a relative who was a member and would like a copy of the team photo just let me know,

I was also wondering if anybody had a photo or know where I can find a photo of the school before it was demolished

If you know where I can also obtain school records - teachers names etc. I would be very grateful for the help.

Many thanks

Suzanne Rowley

Hi Suzanne

My uncle Charles Victor Stevens attended St Johns and was a footballer.  He would have been 13/14 years old in 1929/30.  I would love to see the photo.  My email is jeff.kowalski@outlook.com

Thanks Jeff

This photo also show St John's pupils from about the same period.  It is from 1929 and contains an Arthur FOX - front row third from the left.  With thanks to Farrell Fox!

Ancestry does have a section of Somerset, England, School Registers  which include St John's Boys' School 1905-1914 and St John's Girls' School 1878-1892.  They can be accessed by using the Card Catalogue and just entering Somerset in the first box. These will not help for pupils who were there in 1929 but all records can be found at the Somerset Archives.

Here is an image of St John's School when it first opened as a National School in about 1845.
