KOPP in Yatton
published by Pat Hase on Thu, 20/05/2021 - 17:42

I have had a query about finding an address in Yatton of someone with the surname KOPP who was living there in the 1950s but had moved to Clevedon by 1960.  It is thought they lived in a bungalow and may have attended an RC Church.  The husband was a piano tuner.  Any suggestions of how to find this address would be welcome.

Hi Pat,

Kathleen Gladys Kopp (née Caple) was living at Woodfield Cottage, No. 2, Copse Road, Clevedon, from 1939 to (at least) 1945. As you are likely aware, this comes from the 1939 Census and this newspaper report: Mystery of Bath Woman's Death.

In that report, Kathleen states she has a second home in London (where she spends most of the time): From the London electoral registers this appears to be 14 Grange Hill, Edgware. She and her husband (Bernard Stephen Kopp) do not appear at that address after 1950. So this does leave open that they could be at Yatton from 1950 to 1958 (her death at 47 Old Church Road, Clevedon). I was going to suggest the telephone directories but they never seem to appear in any of them (you would have thought it would be essential for Bernard's job!).

How sure are they that she lived at Yatton from the 1950s?

Regards,
Richard

Thank you Richard, I have passed that message on and they are grateful for your help and can remember visiting them in Yatton in the 1950s.

Just to follow-up on this. Bernard's sister, Rosella Mary Kopp, died at Margate on 25 October 1954, and names Bernard as an executor (and Joseph Ernest Kopp). Her will might reveal Bernard's address. If it names him at Clevedon then that at least lowers the date range that they could be at Yatton.
