CORNELIUS HANCOCK & JANE HANCOCK
published by on Sun, 10/11/2013 - 2:33
Hello,

I am trying to find when and where the burials for Cornelius Hancock and his wife Jane Hancock. All I know is that Cornelius Hancock died around 1801 and Jane his wife was buried March 1801 both in Weston Super Mare.

In 1801 there was only one church in Weston-super-Mare - St John the Baptist, the original Parish Church, so that should be the first place to look for a burial.   How do you know they was buried in Weston?

Where did you find the date for Jane's burial?  According to our transcription and the NBI there is a burial of a Sarah HANCOCK (widow) 14 March 1801 but no Jane HANCOCK

I expect that you know that their son, also a Cornelius HANCOCK, was one of the Weston Worthies - a series of paintings of Weston residents of the 19th Century - He was born in Banwell and is buried in St John's Churchyard, Weston-super-Mare, aged 92 in 1855.

There is, I believe, an extensive obit to him in one of the Weston newspapers which can be viewed in Weston Library.

It might be helpful to look at the Overseers' Accounts for Weston-super-Mare to see whether Cornelius HANCOCK senior was listed as a rate payer of the parish and if so when he disappears from the list.

Although there are several family trees posted online I haven't found the sources for the information they contain and some of them contradict each other.  Some confuse South Brent in Devon with South Brent (Brent Knoll) in Somerset - the possible birthplace of Cornelius HANCOCK senior.  When he marries the register entry states that he was from Berrow (but that's not far from Brent Knoll and he could have been living there).

Perhaps someone else can suggest when and where Cornelius & Jane HANCOCK might have been buried.
