Your title was correct but in your query you say that your great grandmother's maiden name was ATKINSON. I think you will find that it was ATKINS. She was born probably in Weston in 1884 and appears on the 1891 census living with her parents Robert ATKINS from Minehead who was a gardner and mother Emma who came from Stathe in Somerset.
Robert & Emma ATKINS had several children christened at Emmanuel Church - which you can see on our site if you are a full member. They lived in Maine Square (where Dophin Square was).
Am a little puzzled because according to the GRO index Olive's mother's maiden name was BULL but the older children have GOULD as m.m.name and there is a marriage in Bristol in 1868 of a Robert ATKINS and an Emma GOULD - Can anyone offer an explanation?
According to the Weston Mercury in 1889 Robert ATKINS was fined 1/- for not sending his children to school.
Olive ATKINS was in service in Walliscote Road in 1901 and as you probably know in 1911 was in South Wales, married and a nurse. She died in 1923 in Weston and is buried in Weston Cemetery.
Dear Pat, thank you for your detailed reply. Yes I did mean Atkins (predictive text issue)! There was some infomation there I didn' know - about the school and also that she is buried in Weston Cemetery, and that Maine Square beame dolphin square - thank you. Family memory has it that she was killed after being hit by a bus but that is all we know as my grandfather wouldn't speak of her.
I have her baptism as living at 6 Sidmouth Cottages on the 26th September 1884, which I think confirms the birth year.
I also have documents that seem to support that Emma was a Gould, in the marriage certificates to Robert Atkins in Bristol. I am not sure about the Bull surname - I will have a further look.
Are you related to the Atkins at all? The other siblings I have are William, John, Alice Maud, MArk and Mabel Atkins.
with best wishes Claire
I have also attached a photo of Lewis Every, Olive's husband on the Weston sea front.
If Olive was killed in an accident in Weston it islikely that it would have been mentioned in the local newspapers. They are not online for 1923 but are available on film in Weston Library. Perhaps, if there is time one of our volunteers could take a look for you on Saturday during our Free Help Session. I assume that the accident occured shortly before her death and as she was buried on the 22nd June 1923 that should cut down the time needed to search.
It is also possible at the moment to get a PDF version of a death certificate for a reduced fee - which should confirm the cause of death. The GRO site will give all the information you need to get one.
With thanks to Dave Tyler, one of our society volunteers, who this afternoon found an account of the death of Olive EVERY in the local newspaper. I will send you a copy directly to you, but it does look as if sadly, she died from gas poisoning not as a result of an accident as you were led to believe.
My wife is descended from Charles Atkins (Church Steps Minehead) and I recall all of the names mentioned from her family tree which I have been researching for 15 years. I am in contact with the only Atkins I know who I think is the last surviving Atkins of the line. He is now in his 80's and lives in the USA. Neville Atkins. I will look up all the details in the next few days.
