Roynon family
published by on Fri, 15/07/2016 - 19:03
I am looking for any members of the Roynon family of John Roynon (1786 - 1855) and his wife Sarah Mercer (1783 a 1849) or any help finding John's parents or siblings.

Any help would be appreciated as I live in Yorkshire.

The ROYNON  surname often crops up in this area of Somerset - it would be easier to help you if you could tell us where your John ROYNON lived.

John Roynon and Sarah Mercer married on 2 April 1810 at Chew Magna. In 1841 and 1851 they were living at Chew Stoke. They were both buried at Chew Stoke St Andrew.

Any help finding their parents and/or siblings would be appreciated.

Hello Linda

We have an ancestor in common. Sarah Mercer (bap. 11th August 1785 at Chew Stoke) was the younger sister of my ancestor John Bush MERCER, who was baptised 11th May 1777. There was a brother William bap 23rd April 1780, and another called James bap 3rd November 1782. Their parents were John MERCER, carpenter, otp, and Martha BUSH, otp, married 3rd June 1773 at Chew Stoke by licence, witnesses were John BUSH and Robert MERCER (fathers? brothers?). Sadly the licence no longer exists. Equally sadly, there is a gap in the Chew Stoke registers between about 1740-1753 and I can find no baptism of John MERCER. There is a burial of Robert MERCER, Snr, Oct 10th 1762 at Chew Stoke. There are no mentions of  the name MERCER in Chew Stoke before 1760. I have found mentions of MERCERs in Marksbury up to 1730's, then they seem to have moved out. So, are these the same line? And where did they go 1734-1760? Some MERCERs were in Stanton Prior, near to Marksbury, but I can find no record of the baptism of John MERCER in the area.

Hope this is of use,

Anne

According to the 1851 census John was born c1784 in Chew Stoke. FreeReg has 2 baptisms in Chew Stoke around that time:

31 August 1783 to parents Benjamin and Mary

23 November 1783 to parents Thomas and Anne.

It looks like one of them died in 1788 because there is also a burial there of a John ROYNON on 24 February 1788, so some further research is required I'm afraid.

Thank you Anne for this information. I haven't done any research into the Mercer side of the family yet but the information you have provided me with will definitely point me in the direction I must look.

I'm 5th generation Australian but there's a Roynon in my ancestry.

A Joane Milkins married Roger Roynon on 16th Oct. 1623 in St Andrew's Chew Stoke.

Regards,

Brian Milkins

Hi Linda,
I know that you are looking for John ROYNON and family... but would you be interested in ROYNON 1883-2004?

Hi Brian
I am interested in any ROYNON as it will hopefully lead me further back in time to John Roynon (1783 - 1855) ancesters.
Linda.

After the last meeting I was sent some details of a George ROYNON born in 1844 at Chew Stoke who married a Sarah MIDDLE 14th Sept 1868 at St John's Church Bedminster - see Ancestry - whose father's name was given as Christopher ROYNON.  Christopher was the son and grandson of a Joseph ROYNON

One thing I have noticed is that the ROYNON Family seemed to move around Compton Martin, Chew Stoke and other nearby parishes. Joseph ROYNON senior mentioned above married in Dundry so don't limit your research to just Chew Stoke.

As there are several members researching ROYNON I'm sure this one will be cracked soon!
