Mary Mogul - Suicide
published by on Thu, 27/07/2017 - 19:57
Does anyone know where I can find additional information about my ancestor Mary Mogul (nee Choat) who according to her death certificate committed suicide on 28 March 1888. The cause of death on her death certificate is haemorrhage from laceration of the brachial artery, self inflicted. She died in Castle Street, Weston Super Mare, this street doesn't exist anymore.

The Weston Mercury of Saturday 31 March 1888 carries a very detailed account of this event and her inquest.  It can be seen online at FindmyPast or the British Newspaper Archives or on film at Weston-super-Mare Library.

There is also a previous article in the Weston Mercury of Saturday 12 August 1876 which may be about the same person

Mary Ann Mogul, of Exeter, was charged with acting as a pedlar without having certificate at Weston-super-Mare, on the 7th instant.—A.S. Hanuam proved having seen the prisoner offering toys on the sands on the previous day for sale, and upon demanding her certificate, found she had not one.—Prisoner said she was working her way to to Exeter to join her husband, and the articles she offered were the remnants of her little shop. —Discharged.

Hi Pat

Thank you very much Pat for the advice and information. I've got a synopsis of the Article in the Weston Mercury about her death. I was sure that this was a newsworthy item and it is good to know that you can find this on the internet. The whole thing was very sad, but totally unknown to my family. The article you reproduce above is quite sad, she had just had her second child with John Mogul, that was Jane Mogul, in February 1876 and her position would have been very difficult.

I notice that in the new transcriptions of burials of the Milton Road Cemetery available for full members on this site that John & Mary MOGUL are both buried there.

There is the birth of a Jane MOGUL registered in the Axbridge District in 1878 - is that the child you mentioned or did the earlier one die?  (she's not in the cemetery)

Hi Pat you are a mind of information thank you for that I haven't found Jane's birth certificate yet. Thank you also for the heads up on the Mogul burials. Jane Mogul eventually married a Frederick Laver and lived until 1947. Her sister, Mary Ann Kate Rose Mogul is my 2nd great grandmother. I discovered that John Mogul is also in the press but I haven't had time to look. I think Jane was the subject of this - child neglect. She ends up in an Industrial Home in Coventry in 1891. All very tragic and upsetting but very interesting reading. I think that anything on Mogul is to do with them. Thank you for all your help.
