Hodges Family published by on Tue, 25/07/2017 - 11:23
My ancestor was Joseph Hodges who should have been born around 1775. He married twice; to Sarah Stabbens at Hutton on 24th April 1804 and after her death in 1808 he married Sarah Stone at Hutton on 26th December 1812. They had nine children and Joseph died in Weston Super Mare on 19th February 1848 aged 73. Sarah outlived him and died on 14th May 1866.
I am trying to find out where Joseph came from and whether there is any connection to Hugh Hodges of WSM who was a contemporary of his.
The only clue that I have is that John Hodges witnessed Joseph's second marriage, so I guess he was related.
I have just found this website today and noted that you posted details about the Hodges family of Weston Super Mare, this is my family. If you want to compare notes let me know.
My great great great Gran was Anne Hodges, daughter of Joseph, who married James Davis at Burnham on Sea in 1838. They kept the Lamb at Highbridge. I am sending you a message (hopefully - I am new to this).
I'm also new to this, just registered today. This is a wonderful website. I don't have an Anne Hodges in my tree, however my tree is published on Ancestry.co.uk. You can have a look at it there or email me details of what you have for your Hodges line and we can see if we have a match.
Hi
Like a fellow researcher, Rick, I have just joined, and am very interested to collaborate on the ancestors and immediate family of Joseph Hodges, 1775-1848. Like you, we have found the two marriages - Sarah Stabbins, and then Sarah Stone. Please could you contact me so we can compare notes. Many thanks.

We are cousins because I'm also descended from Joseph Hodges. I've been working with Jan Ross who is married to a Hodges and descendant of Joseph Hodges. We just pieced together there married life of Joseph Hodges yesterday and I can confirm the facts as you find it. I believe that Jan Ross has been in touch with you.
My next task is to find out where Joseph is from. I found a Hugh and Joyce Hodges who had a Henry Hodges in Hutton in 1809. Jan also mentioned a John Hodges on source documents for the marriage records with Sarah Stone. I haven't been about to locate Joseph on the 1841 census. It might be possible to find their origins by looking at the other family members if connections can be made.
I have Thomas Hodges (1821 to 1889) and Hannah Radford's marriage certificate (Thomas is Joseph's son). Usually on such certificates the father is noted as deceased. On this certificate dated 1860, it doesn't say that Joseph is deceased. Are you sure about the 1848 date is the correct date. Anyway there are lots of leads to follow.
