SMART wedding of 1938
This photo was taken on April 23rd, 1938 after the wedding at Emmanuel Church, Weston-super-Mare of Sydney Arthur SMART (known as Jack) and Louisa Evelyn WATKINS. The reception, where this photo was taken was held above the Co-op on the corner of Whitecross Road and Severn Road.  The bride was wearing a pale blue dress and the bridesmaids were in Ivory with hats to match.

Their daughter, society member, Ann CURRY, can name all in the photograph but is curious to know whether anyone else knows anything about the family.

In the back row, from left to right are:

  1. Leonard SMART, brother of the groom, who later was a newsagent in Locking Road
  2. Ernest Edward SMART, father of the groom, who lived in Sandford Road,
  3. Iris SMART, née HARTREE, wife of Leonard
  4. William JERVIS, brother-in law of the bride, married to her sister, Bessie
  5. The Groom – Sydney Arthur SMART – known as Jack
  6. The Bride – Louisa Evelyn WATKINS
  7. Alfred Augustus WATKINS, father of the bride
  8. Leonard PIPER, nephew of the bride
  9. Lily PIPER, née WATKINS, sister of the bride
  10. Oswald PIPER, brother-in law of the bride, married to Lily

Seated in the front are, from left to right:

  1. Druzilla SMART, née TEECE, mother of the groom
  2. Frances SMART, sister of the groom
  3. Mary Jane WATKINS, known as Jenny, sister of the bride
  4. Honor Elizabeth JERVIS née WATKINS, known as Bessie, sister of the bride and wife of William JERVIS – She is wearing black as she is in mourning for their two-year-old daughter, Ann Rose Elizabeth (Betty) who had died from meningitis in February 1938.

There are several graves in Milton Road Cemetery for members of these families.  If anyone is researching them please let us know so that Ann can continue her research.  She is particularly interested in her mother’s family – the WATKINS.   The birth of Louisa Evelyn WATKINS, Ann’s mother, was registered in Bedwelty in 1917, her parents being Alfred Augustus WATKINS and Annie BAKER who were married there in 1900.  Thank you
