Cathedral marriages

Please can anyone tell me what detail was necessary  to be able to be married in a cathedral?- a lack of smaller churches? e.g., Samuel Bruce seemingly married Sarah Dickinson 4th Oct 1781 in Cathedral of St. Peter.Sheffield. YKS. Thanks, Sylvia

I cannot give a definitive answer to your question I'm afraid. However, my wife's paternal ancestors are from Sheffield and a large number of them were baptised at St Peter's going back to the early 1500's. My information is that at that time it was "merely" the Parish Church. It did not become a Cathedral until 1914.
