James Perry 1783(?) - 1855(?)
published by on Mon, 24/10/2016 - 16:37

I am tracing the history of my 3rd great grandfather.

the 1841 and 1851 census shows he was resident at Long Ashton Workhouse and was born in Bradford (on Tone), Somerset around 1783.

The only baptisms in Bradford on Tone with this name are with this name are on 15/02/1789 and 20/09/1807. There is a baptism at St Johns, Wellington on 19/10/1783. Which is likely to be the correct one?

I think he died in between 1851 and 1861 although I cannot find any trace. If he died in Long Ashton Workhouse, where would the death have been registered and where were residents buried?

Any help would be apprecited.

While I'm not able to clarify on the baptism... I found an additional record for consideration in Dec 1784 in St Mary Taunton... the death record would fall under the Bedminster district. A quick search has found a death record for James Perry in Oct Dec 1855 in Bedminster. There are records held at the Somerset Heritage Centre from the workhouse.

I applied for that Death Certificate but found it refered to a James Perry who died age 83 on 11/12/1855 in the Sub-district of Yatton.

Long Ashton Workhouse was situated in the parish of Flax Bourton and was in the Poor Law (and Registration) District of Bedminster.  So the death of a James PERRY registered in the Bedminster District in 1855 is possibly the one you are looking for.  I am not aware that the Workhouse had its own burial ground - there are burials of people who died there in Flax Bourton and Long Ashton.  Some Workhouses sent bodies to their home parishes for burial - do you know where he was living before his admission - he might be buried there.  Although there are a few Admission & Discharge Registers available for the Long Ashton Workhouse (In the Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton) none have survived for the time of his stay there and the death Register starts in 1866.
