Rev. H. G. Tomkins (1827-1908) published by on Sat, 11/06/2016 - 19:43
Tomkins moved to Weston super Mare in 1872 or 1873 and became chaplain to the West of England Sanatorium. I am in search of a photograph or portrait of him.
The Rev Henry George TOMKINS had an earlier connection with Weston-super-Mare.
He was married to a Sophia COLEHURST in 1853 at St John's Church Weston-super-Mare but his wife died (following the birth of their son) in 1855 and was buried at St John's Church. - details from our own transcriptions. He is described as a J.P in Weston in 1855 and took part in the Petty Sessions that year.
According to our burial records of Milton Road Cemetery, Weston-super-Mare, the Rev TOMKINS died on the 21st Feb 1907 (not 1908) and was buried in the same grave as his second wife who had died in 1904 - Grave No Tc 908a.
None of this helps you with a photograph but you might try Weston Library - their North Somerset Studies Library has files of Information about local organisations. If you contact them about the Sanatorium they may have some information or photographs which may be useful. Sharon Poole, who has written several books about Weston, may also have photographs of the Sanatorium and its staff: she can be contacted here
Thank you, Pat, for your helpful information. I'll follow it up. A visit to the Internet will show that Tomkins was a prolific author on biblical history and archaeology, and also lectured on the history of Weston super Mare.
