Weston Mercury 1939 - Online? published by on Tue, 12/04/2016 - 9:36
Hi,
I'm trying to find out if the Weston Mercury archives are now online through any of the online newspaper websites. My grandmother/grandfather were married 04th October 1939. I belive there was a wedding photo published which showed my grandfather's Royal Navy colleagues in line throwing their hats up in the air. I'd be keen to try to obtain a copy of this picture as the family owned photo has been lost in time. Alternatively, if anyone know how I can access original archive copies of the Mercury or microfiche copies I'd be most grateful.
The British Newspaper Archives has promised to add the Weston Mercury to its online catalogue but nothing yet. They have started with the Weston Gazette which is available from 1845 - 1856 at the moment. However both papers are available on film in Weston Library and as you know the actual date of the marriage perhaps one of our volunteers may have time to find it during the Help Session on Saturday. What are the names of your grandparents?
Thanks Pat (and volunteers) that's most appreciated.
Their names were Lilian Robins and Harry Ferrier. Harry was from London and met Lilian whan he was stationed for training at RAF Locking. (He was a Royal Navy Air Mechanic).
I will send a photo directly to you - but Dave Tyler found it for you in the Weston Gazette - there was nothing in the Weston Mercury and although the photo is not very clear it doesn't look as if they are throwing their hats into the air! The description under the photograph in the Gazette reads:
"Mr Harry Alfred FERRIER and Miss Lilian Margaret ROBIN [sic] were married at Weston-super-Mare Register Office on Wednesday afternoon - and greeted by a guard of honour of the bridegroom's Fleet Air Arm colleagues"
