In search of Douglas Albert Dugdale
published by on Sat, 19/03/2016 - 14:16
Hello.. Thanks for adding me.
I'm looking for any stories or information on my grandfather, Douglas Albert Dugdale. Born in Portsea 1867, Died in Clevedon September 1947. He was married to Margaret Rymer, and they had 2 children. My aunt and my Dad, Douglas Dugdale.

D.A. Dugdale was a glass and antique merchant who travelled quite a bit, before settling in Clevedon.

Thanks
Sandy

It is difficult to answer this not knowing how much you already know.   Margaret was quite a bit younger that her husband  (see date of birth on 1939 Register on Findmypast).  If you look at the census records you will see that Douglas Albert DUGDALE was previously married to an Isabel and they had at least two children.  An image of the certificate of this marriage in 1891 can be seen on Ancestry via the London Metropolitan Archives.

If you look at the British Newspaper Archives which are available as part of the Findmypast Subscription you will see that a D DUGDALE came 2nd in the 400 yards race in the Clevedon School Sports in 1939 - your father?

For local knowledge about Clevedon take a look at the Web site of the Local History Group of the Clevedon Civic Society

Thanks so much.. Yes, it could have been my father, who was in the school Sport event in 1939.
My grandfather was married to Isabel Emmeline Bateman Warren who died in Edinburgh Scotland. Leaving 2 daughters, Dorothy and Phyllis.. He then married Margaret Rymer (who was born in Scotland), and had my Aunt Molly (1923) and my Dad, Douglas (1924).

I'm hoping to find a grave or headstone of Douglas Albert Dugdale.

I'm still hoping to find the cemetery and a headstone, for my grandfather. I've exhausted all avenues that I've found. Ancestry, Find a Grave,Billions of Graves. Written to the churches. No one seems to know where he is. PLEASE HELP. I have all his certificates for BMD and census records. Just don't know where he's buried.

Not everything is online.  As you have his death certificate - where did he die and who was the informant?  That may give a clue.  The nearest Crematorium in 1946 would have been in Bristol so you might try their records. Email them stating your problem, contact details is given in the link to their records.

As you know - he isn't in the Clevedon Cemetery but did you try the Clevedon Civic Society as I suggested before?  The Cemetery and St Andrew's Churchyard are very close.

There might be an announcement of his funeral in the local newspaper - if you contact the North Somerset Studies Library with the name and date of death they may be able to help you.

Even if you find where he was buried - not all graves have memorials.

Thanks for the info and leads on where to search next. Douglas Albert died on the 1st of September 1947. Registration District, Weston-Super-Mare in the sub-district of Clevedon, in the county of Somerset. The informant was his wife, Margaret Dugdale nee Rymer, of Roseland Old Church Road. Registrar was Charles Baker. I hope this helps.. I have tried all avenues. His daughter (my Aunt) is 93 and would really like to know where her father is buried.
