Does anyone know who the parents were of Richard Puddy? He married Ann Thomas at Bridgwater on 3 October 1701. They had several children all in the parish registers of Mark. He was buried on 6 October 1723 at Mark (on the register it says Mark Moor).
You are not alone in wanting to solve this puzzle! Richard PUDDY’s 4 x great grandson married my father’s sister and another Richard PUDDY, birth date also unknown but first child born in 1725 in Mark, is my husband’s 4 x great grandfather.
There are several trees on Ancestry which seem to have an answer to your problem but as they do not give their sources and much of the information seems speculative I would be reluctant to take them at face value. It is suggested that Richard was born in South Brent (Brent Knoll) in about 1670, the son of a John & Alice but as yet I have been unable to verify this.
Using our own transcriptions for Mark, there is even a query over Richard’s children.
John PUDDE was christened 1702/3 but as only his father’s name was given there is some doubt about him although the date of birth would seem to match the marriage of Richard PUDDY to Ann THOMAS in 1701.
Thomas PODDE christened in 1709/10 s/o Richard & Ann
Sarah PUDDE christened in 1712 with only father’s name given
William PUDDY christened in 1714 s/o Richard & Ann
Richard christened in 1717/18 s/o Richard & Ann but surname illegible.
Researching PUDDY and its variants can be a challenge – there are a couple of other members who are also looking at the family so perhaps they might be able to help.
