History of Burlington Street
published by on Wed, 23/12/2015 - 17:25

Please advise, my grandfather was born at 1 Burlington Street

in the 1870's.

For research I visited this address and there appeared to be

a complete reversal of house numbers.

In fact it appeared that my grandfathers original address had

been demolished.?

I would appreciate some dates or street plans which would

help in the determination of reasons in alterations, etc.

Regards                                        Mike

House numbers were changed in about 1908/9 for some of the roads in Weston including Burlington Street which runs from Alfred Street to Hopkins Street crossing Orchard Street. For example in 1901 Robert PAYNE is listed at No 13 but in 1911 his house is No 11 - this is the Clara's Cottage of Weston Museum.

But I think No 1 remained the same.  I believe No 1 was on the south side of Burlington Street near to its junction with Alfred Street.  I note that on the 1871 Census a Joseph TUTTON was living at 1 Burlington Street and the next entries are for Poplar Place. Poplar Place is a small cul-de-sac off Burlington Street, next to the old Chapel.

In 1874 planning permission was granted for a cottage near Burlington Street Chapel  – see Somerset Heritage Centre Online catalogue.  Reference  - DBwsm/24/2/138

These planning documents for buildings in Weston-super-Mare are very interesting and usually include plans of the area involved so it might be useful to visit the Somerset Heritage Centre or if you live locally look out for the next visit of the North Somerset Archivist to Weston Library.
