Marriage - Caroline JARVIS to Henry HAM 1858 published by Les Martels on Thu, 13/03/2014 - 19:58
I am trying to locate the marriage of the above relatives. Caroline came from South Brent (Brent Knoll) where I expected to find the marriage and Henry came from Chapel Allerton. The civil registration for Axbridge shows they married 2nd quarter of 1858 and their first child (that I have found) Harry was born 2/1862 Chapel Allerton. Followed by Hephzibah 1/1864, George Henry Lewis (J) 3/1866, Charles 2/1869 (or 3/1869) and Harriet 2/1871. It is possible that another child was born between 1858 and 1862 as she seemed to have children pretty regularly.
The family emigrated to America in 1872 where I have found later information.
Does anyone have access to Chapel Allerton marriages and baptisms and would be willing to look these dates for me please?
The marriages at Chapel Allerton are included in those which have been transcribed from the Bishops Transcripts and published on the Somerset Online Parish Clerk Site. However, unfortunately, it doesn't look as if they were married there.
There is a site which sometimes enables you to identify the churches from the Reference Numbers on the GRO Index. It is not complete but always worth a try. It's called Marriage Locator and is a project set up by the Guild of One Name Studies.
It is of course possible that they were married in a Register Office and so the marriage will not be in any Church record.
One other point - Caroline JARVIS - There was a family called JERVIS which was prominant in Axbridge itself so it might be worth looking for variants when researching that name.

Hi Pat,
Many thanks for your reply to my request. I have checked out Chapel Allerton marriages on FreeReg not realising they were so up to date, I just thought they did not cover 1858 until I checked the parishes page. So it may be that they married in a non conformist establishment as none of the children appear to have been baptised either.
Thank you for the marriage locator site, that is a new one on me as I always use Neil Dun's site and that did not help either..
I will investigate the non con angle and see if I can find anything there. I do check all spellings of Jarvis as I have come across many different spellings. See my entry on Surname Interests.

Hi Roy,
Thanks for your interest in my post.
I had already established the correct pairing of that GRO index but could not find the marriage at her home parish so thought I would try looking at his parish. They obviously married elsewhere and it may well have been at a Register Office.
If the cost of certificates ever comes down, I will purchase one but as it is not the direct line of my family, I am afraid I cannot justify the cost at present.
