GETTING STARTED
published by on Wed, 26/02/2014 - 20:39
Hi there,
I am very new to this and would like to know a little more about both mine and my husbands history which is based in and around weston.
I my maiden name is Gill and my mothers maiden name is Richards.
The only real info I have is my immediate grandparents :Vera & Bill Gill/ Doris & Sam Richards .
My husbands name is Hayden his history is a little more sketchy a family fallout prevents any real digging.
His mothers maiden name was Thomas (jane) with with his grand mothers maiden name of Kelly (Kathleen).
His father Ray was one of 9 haydens we think but we are not sure.
Can any one shed anymore light on either lines so we can at least get started.

You already have a great deal of information and should be able to make great strides very quickly.  On our web site under the Main Menu on the left hand side of the home page is a section called Help and Advice.  If you click on that you will find that the second item is Family History for Beginners which contains some general advice for anyone starting their research.

One of the Free Sites available to search the Indexes for Births, Marriages and Deaths from 1837 is FreeBMD.  If you haven't already done so - try this site - start by looking for your own birth and then the births and marriage of your parents and then the births and marriage of your grandparents and so on.  From 1912 on the index for Births the mother's maiden name is also given.  If you have any difficult you would be very welcome to come into the Library in Weston any Saturday afternoon when we would be able to help you.

You mentioned the names of your GILL Grandparents.  I think have found their burials in Weston Cemetery.

The inscription on the grave reads - Plot V 235, In loving memory of a beloved Husband and Father WILLIAM HENRY GILL (BILL) who passed away 1st January 1973 aged 50 years.  His life a beautiful memory his absence a silent grief. In the same grave is Vera Marjorie GILL who died 17th Aug 2005 and was buried on the 26th Aug 2005, aged 78.

From that inscription you should be able to find the registration of their births - Bill GILL (who was William H H GILL) in 1922. and Vera in about 1927.  If you look for their marriage I think you will find that Vera's maiden name was FISHER.

You can then try the same with the RICHARDS and HAYDEN families.  Good Luck with this - Let us know how you are getting on.
