Sorry there is no record of either George or Annie Rowland being buried in WsM Milton Road Cemetery. Perhaps another member can suggest where else to look.

In a Street Directory of Weston for 1952 there is a Geo Wm ROWLAND living at 25 Osborne Road, Weston and there is a death reigistered in this district in 1954 of a George W ROWLAND aged 76.  Could these refer to your George ROWLAND?

It is possible that there might have been an announcement of his death in a local newspaper - These are available to view on film at the local library in Weston or if you know the exact date of the death we could search during a Help Session to see if one was published which gave the place for the funeral.

All churchyards in Weston-super-Mare were closed to new burials in the 1850s when the Milton Road Cemetery was opened.  If a family already had a grave at St John the Baptist (the Parish Church) that could have been used - but that was quite rare.  Burials still took place in adjacent parishes of Uphill and Worle for their parishioners.  It is more likely that he was cremated - probably in Bristol - as the Crematorium in Weston didn't open until later.  In my own family I have a cremation  in Arnos Vale Crematorium in 1962 of a Weston resident.

When did Ann die?

Hope this helps

Thanks very much...that is my great Granfather and yes he did live at Osborne rd, I have the certificate.  His wife died in 1962.  I wasn't sure when cremations started.  My family believed he was definetly buried but I don't believe there was a family grave elsewhere.  Could you let me know if I can find out about cremations...

I really appreciate your help,

Pauline

Having eliminated Milton Road Cemetery as a possible burial place for George ROWLAND.  There are some other possibilities - What was his religion?  If, for example, he travelled out of Weston to attend a Quaker's Meeting House he might have been buried elsewhere.  Had he always lived in Weston? Sometime people are taken to a previous parish for burial.

I see that Annie died in Wells - was that because she was in Hospital there or had she moved away from Weston?

It is always difficult to discover where a burial took place - You could apply to Weston Library who may do a limited search for you for an obit in the local newspapers as you know the actual date of death.  Or you could wait until members of this society are in there - our next Help Session is on the 6th April - when if we have a free volunteer they could look it up for you.

The Bristol Cematorium opened in Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol in 1929,  Arnos Vale has  its own web site and search facility for which a charge is made.  Their initial search should establish whether or not a cremation or burial took place in Arnos Vale.  Click here for more details.
