For some years I have tried to find the date of the birth of William Gadd, so I can purchase a copy of his birth certificate. He is a direct ancestor. He was born about 1846, in Luxborough, Somerset, the local parish register gives his date of baptism as 13 September 1846. I have the certificates for other siblings, all were baptised within some six weeks of birth, suggesting he was born around late summer 1846.

It is possible that his birth was registered late(r) for whatever reason. Have you looked at the William GADD whose birth was registered in Williton in 1849?
Thank you for taking the trouble to reply to my query. Apologies for the delay in replying but it has been some time since I delved into this side of my ancestry, and I had to check my information, and re-learn it.
The William Gadd you mentioned cannot be my man; if my William was registered late then his birth would have been recorded with that relating to the births of his later brothers and sisters. I have copies of these birth certificates, and my William had a brother born 12 Feb 1849, which would preclude the William you mention, since this chap was born during the following quarter.
Furthermore, copies of his marriage certificate, April 1868, record his age as 22, giving a birth year around 1845/46.
His death certificate, issued July 1916, records an age of 69, which would suggest a birth year of 1846/47.
Some years ago I did get the GRO to try o find it, but they failed, although I have always believed that they mixed up this with another query I had at that time.
His parents recorded the birth of all their other children diligently, despite moving a couple of times.
This is my problem, no reference to a birth means I cannot order a copy of his birth certificate!
The mystery continues; but thank you so much for your effort.

Hi Edward. I accept that all of the evidence suggests a birth in 1846. However, I still think that, due to some oversight, the birth might not have been registered then. Perhaps the later birth/registration of his brother might have prompted the parents into taking action. Perhaps not. But if it were me I'd have to obtain the 1849 certificate - just to be sure!
There appear to be 2 William Gadds born in that area around that time. Both are registered in the Williton Registration District which includes Luxborough. They are:-

William Gadd Registered 2Q1849 GRO Volume 10 Page 541
Either he was born in 1843, registered then and not baptised until 1846, or born before 1846, baptised then and not registered until 1849.
The other fly in the ointment is that there is a William Gadd registered as dying in the same District in 1Q1848, GRO Volume 10 Page 440. Unfortunately there is no record of the age at death there. This could mean that the death relates to the earlier birth and the survivor was the latter birth.
Because of baptism cost, it was some times much later than birth
