My grandparents lived at 9a Eastfield Park between 1956 and 1976, and I have very fond memories of spending the first 17 summers of my life there. My grandfather purchased the whole property and had it converted into flats; he and my grandmother lived in the upstairs flat.
A few years ago I did a bit of research into 9 Eastield Park's former owners and, via the various censuses available, discovered that it was owned by a Mrs Isabella Hay Murray, widow of a former RN captain.
I'd love to find out more about 9 Eastfield Park - and Eastfield Park in general, if anyone knows anything.
I have been into W-S-M library and found all the residents/owners of 9 Eastfield Park. The earliest is 1877 with your Isabella Murray.
In 1912 there is a new person there - J L Dickenson and the house is named Trelynwydd along with its number.
Various people have lived there over the years. Do you want all their names and dates? Or are you looking for anyone in particular? Let me know – I have made a note of them all just in case.
The Somerset Record Office has the planning application for that address. Go to Online Catalogue and in ‘any text’ key in Denning as she was there from 1943 until 1964 and you will see a planning application for 1942 for the house to be converted into flats.
I've just found my copy of a Weston-super-Mare Local History Trail published in 1978 - "No 4, The Boulevard and Montpelier" in which it describes Eastfield Park as "another of the town's private housing estates, built across the road from the Montpelier Estate in the 1870s, on the site of part of the East Field, one of the old common fields of village Weston. The size and prominence of the open space, behind which the houses are glimpsed in discreet retirement, makes this one of the most rural and tranquil of Weston's estates and the background of the Weston woods above the houses adds the finishing touch. Most of the houses have carriage drives, and ample room for servants in the back premises.
Henry BUTT, the first Mayor of Weston (in 1937) lived in 1 Eastfield Park on the corner of Arundell Road and your relations were at the other end. There were just 10 houses in Eastfield Park all overlooking the private Park which separated them from Bristol Road.
I live at 9 Eastfield Park! We bought the ground floor flat in 2004 and the upstairs flat in 2007. We have since had a new staircase put in and have tried our best to return the house to as close to its original grandeur as possible. Bev, did you come and see the house a few years ago? I did meet someone who said that their grandparents used to live here but we had just had a burglary and I was reticent to invite them in.
