Of this Parish ? published by on Wed, 01/01/2014 - 20:20
Of this Parish (OTP) was often used in Parish register records to identify a persons place of residence. Does anyone know if a prescribed period of time was necessary to become recognised as OTP if you were not born there?
If you are simply looking at marriage records then I understand that "of this parish" could mean that the person only needed to be living in the parish during the time it took to read the banns - i.e. 3 weeks.
Absolutely correctly Pat, but, if I may add - it applies to the actual moment the person was actual living in the parish, and does not necessarily mean they were still there the day after the event, or indeed the day before. Many events were performed stating the address or place at the time of the event when in fact the person actually lived elsewhere, for instance a male living at shall we say Moorlinch marrying a girl who lived at Burnham, and the ceremony taking place at Burnham, in those days often meant an overnight stay at the bride's home town, which was then stated somewhat ambiguously in the register as such. Excellent pratice work for budding Sherlocks though!
