Lilian Blanche Godden
published by on Tue, 11/09/2012 - 13:38

I have just received my GG Aunt Lilian Blanche Godden's death certificate which shows she died in Weston Super Mare, the address given is Hillsborough House, Selworthy Road she died in 1978 aged 84.

Lilian came from Bath and the 1911 Census shows her working in Worcestershire - I have no idea when she came to WSM I know nothing about her except she was unmarried.  It is a long shot but has anyone ever heard of her?  I understand the Electoral Roll is unavailable until October because of relocation, I think Hillsborough House may be 'sheltered' accomodation I would like to know where she lived prior to moving there.

Any help or information would be appreciated.

Hi,

I used to live and work in Selworthy Road. As I remember, Hillsborough House was a large modern block of flats on the corner of Selworthy Road and St Ives Road, beside the infants school, since demolished, but not sheltered accomodation.

If I can be of any further help, just give me a shout!

In the Kelly's Directories for 1971 & 1974 Miss L B GODDEN is listed at 39, Hillsborough House.  So she must have arrived before 1971.  Although perhaps not strictly sheltered accommodation I think Hillsborough House, which was built in 1964 with 28 one-bedroom flats did have visiting support and a community alarm.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my post.  I have now established that Lilian Godden spent many years in WSM - does anyone have any idea how I can find out what she did or if anyone knew of her?  My actual interest is her sister Elsie Ellen (Helen) Godden (my G. Grandmother) from Bath who completely vanishes after 1916 I wonder if I can find out as much as I can about her sister it may lead me to clues about her.

Many thanks Emma
